Corfu, nestled in the embrace of the turquoise Ionian Sea, is an idyllic island where history whispers through the breezes and memories dance along the cobblestone streets. A walk through this retreat is like a tapestry of history, where each step paints vivid images from the past.
Corfu, wonderful, green island
Oh, wonderful, green island – Corfu – dreamlike, paradisiacally beautiful – I am still here – but I already know now that I want to see you again – and return here, maybe soon, very soon!
The sea and mountains, varied blue and vast, I like them very much. The seashore invites you for a walk, afterwards I enjoy the Greek wine. Palms, flowers in great numbers – also culturally you have a choice. Thousands of dancing fireflies in the hedges, sparkling in competition with the stars, at night, at night. Whether Euro or Drachma, your country is so beautiful! Don’t lose courage – somehow it will go on. Corfu – dreamlike, paradisiacally beautiful, I want to see you again, maybe soon, very soon!
Corfu, also known as Kerkyra in Modern Greek, is an island in the Ionian Sea with nearby small islands that form the municipality and regional unit of Kerkyra. The island is about 36 miles long and 17 miles wide. The island is rich in water and fertile, and is considered the most beautiful landscape of all Greek islands. Olive trees predominate, but figs, oranges, lemons, grapes, and corn are also cultivated.
Ancient history: According to folklore, the island was Scheria, the home of the Phaeacians in Homer’s epic. A Corinthian colony, founded in 734 BC, replaced an Eretrian village from Euboea. The new colony was restricted by the Corinthian tyrant Periander, but later regained its independence.
Middle Ages: Throughout the Middle Ages, Corfu was repeatedly exposed to invasions, barbarian raids, and the violent and unlawful appropriation by Europeans. Despite these hurdles, Corfu managed to flourish and preserve its Greek character. The island has effectively adopted the finest aspects of the civilizations that have left their mark on its culture over the years. In Kerkyra, one can immediately notice the Venetian influence in the architecture, as it was under Venetian rule for several years.
Corfu got the name the Green Island because of the plantations of olive and cypress trees. Corfu’s culture is a fascinating mix of ancient Greece and modern Europe. The history, language, food, art, literature, music, festivals, olives, and wine of the island all contribute to its diverse cultural heritage. The old town of Kerkyra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a MUST.
Corfu has a coastline of about 900 km and several breathtaking beaches and turquoise oceans.
Visit historical sites such as the Old Fortress, the New Fortress, and the Liston Promenade, and don’t forget Spianada Square, the largest in the Balkans.
You will get your money’s worth by visiting various mountain villages by car, such as Perithia, Doukades, Varipatades, Afionas, Liapades, Agios Matheos, Canal d’Amour in Sidari. Spend time here.
The island of Corfu offers, besides beach holidays and beautiful beaches, also much in terms of culture and history. Here are some examples. Archaeological Museum in Corfu Town. Museum of Asian Art in the former palace. Byzantine Museum as well as the Royal Palace Mon Repos in Kanoni. The Sea Museum in Benitses.
Corfu also offers golf, mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, paragliding, tennis, water parks in Agios Ioannis, and of course sailing. Please contact me if you have any questions about this. A holiday that will definitely be worthwhile.
