Check-in
Valtret Dorfschule
Description
Rent an entire old village school from the 1950s, 10 km from Tiveden National Park. 53 beds, large kitchen, dining hall for 72, gymnasium, and a library that serves as a conference room — all under one roof. The old classrooms are now dormitories, plus family rooms with names like Rektorsexpeditionen (the principal’s office), Kontoret (the office), and Skolbusschaufförens lägenhet (the school bus driver’s apartment). Perfect for kickoffs, leadership retreats, retreats, family gatherings and group trips that want the whole house and the forest to themselves. Nearest swimming spot: Näs (3 km).
The accommodation
Classes were held in Valtret's school until 2007. Since 2020, we have been renting out the entire property to groups who need lots of space, their own kitchen, their own dining hall, and a setting that is anything but a conference hotel. The main building dates from the 1950s and stands right next to the older schoolhouses from the 19th century. The room names are still from the school days — and so is the feeling in the corridors: tall windows and a large gymnasium.
The library is charmingly furnished — with a projector, blackboard, and comfortable armchairs. The Gillestuga (the lounge, former workshop) is made for group work and breaks — large TV with game console, plus a selected board game collection.
The kitchen is perfect for team activities — cooking together is one of the best kickoff exercises we know. The fully equipped kitchen has a professional convection oven, a warming cabinet, an industrial dishwasher, and plenty of refrigerators and freezers. Two toilets have child seats (one by the gym, and the one with a changing table). Potties, baby seats, and high chairs are available.
We have several table tennis tables — for casual games and full-fledged tournaments. Sleeping places — a total of 55 (58 including extra beds):
- Stora sovsalen (large dormitory, former classroom): 20 places in 10 bunk beds, plus a double bed
- Lilla sovsalen (small dormitory, former classroom): 16 places in 8 bunk beds
- Skolbusschaufförens lägenhet (the school bus driver's apartment): double room with private bathroom
- Läkarmottagningen (the doctor's room): double room with private toilet
- Datasalen (the computer room): double bed + bunk bed
- Rektorsexpeditionen (the principal's office): two adjoining rooms, two double beds and a single bed — ideal for a larger family
- Trinetten (small room with its own mini-kitchen): small double room
- Hörnrummet (the corner room): small double room with additional bunk bed
- Damrummet (the ladies' room): small double room behind the kitchen, also serves as a playroom for children during the day. Furnished as a bedroom upon request.
Rooms:
- Dining hall with space for 72 people (high chairs available)
- Large kitchen with convection oven, dishwasher, and equipment for cooking with large groups*
- Biblioteket (the library) — thousands of books, a lectern, a projection screen, and a blackboard. A classic lecture room. - Gillestugan (the lounge, former workshop) — sofas, armchairs, television, musical instruments and toys, drawing paper and colored pencils
- Gymnastiksalen (the gymnasium) — fully equipped. Loved by children, loved by kickoff groups. Occasionally set up as a banquet hall or large conference room.
- Kontoret (the office) — several workspaces for anyone who needs to get something done in between. Printer, projector, network cables.
- Parking lot for around 20 cars. * The fully equipped kitchen features a professional convection oven, a warming cabinet, an industrial dishwasher, and several refrigerators and freezers. If you prefer not to cook yourself: we are happy to recommend local catering.
Bed linen can be rented for a small additional fee — or you can bring your own.
The premises must be left in the same condition as upon your arrival. We ask you to let us know which rooms were used. Children are warmly welcome — the house is child-friendly equipped.
Wi-Fi throughout the house.
Good mobile phone reception.

The Summer in Tiveden
The Swedish summer is not vague. It begins sometime at the end of May, when the birch leaves have finally opened, and lasts until August, when the warmth gradually subsides. Between June and mid-July, the light is something completely different from what you are used to: at 10 p.m. the sun is still above the treetops, at 11 p.m. the sky glows cobalt blue, and two hours later it is already starting to dawn again. You manage to have dinner, take a walk, swim in Viken, play a table tennis tournament, and watch the sunset — all on the same evening.
Valtrets skola is located in the middle of all this. Undenäs is a village with a few hundred inhabitants, an ICA supermarket, a gas station, a church, and not much more. That is good. That is the point.
Tiveden
Ten kilometers to the north lies Tiveden National Park — one of the most dramatic in Sweden. The forest here is so old that the roots of the spruces have grown over the boulders left behind by the Ice Age. This is called a block field. It looks as if a giant had played boules and forgotten to collect the balls. Paths for all levels wind between the stones: twenty-minute loops with viewpoints for those who want to look without sweating, and day hikes for those who want to find the most remote lakes of the park. What awaits you there: silence. Not the curated silence of a yoga studio — the real kind, where you can stand for fifteen minutes and hear only a woodpecker two kilometers away. The scent of needles and moor. Shadows moving through the moss when the wind comes. Sometimes a moose, sometimes a black grouse. And, if you're lucky in August, blueberries in such quantities that you'll have lips the wrong color for a week.
The Göta Canal
Forsvik is located 10 km from the school. Here in 1813 the very first lock of the Göta Canal was built — still in operation, with the same stone and the same logic as back when Baltzar von Platen drew up the plans. Walking along the lock gates on a Sunday in July, while three white motorboats are slowly lowered into the basin and the canal ship Bellevue glides past on its way to Lake Vänern, is so Swedish that it should be an official summer activity. In Forsvik there is also an industrial museum, an old foundry, and a café with homemade cakes — a perfect half-day excursion between the workshops.
Viken and Unden
Viken is the nearest lake. Three kilometers to the swimming spot in Näs — a small, quiet beach where the group can go straight into the water after an afternoon workshop. If you want to swim in larger waters, there are several options deeper in Tiveden: Ösjönäs, where you can rent a sauna right by the water, or Vitsand — a wider sandy beach in the middle of the primeval forest, completely surrounded by the national park.
Unden is something quite different: large, deep, dark, lined with islands covered in coniferous forest. Here you fish for char and trout, and here you row out early in the morning, when the water is like glass and the mist lies along the shores. We can arrange boat rentals and guided tours on Viken and Unden — just let us know when you book.
The Swedish forest — what you actually get
Honestly: there are mosquitoes. Most in June, fewer in July, hardly any in August. Bring mosquito repellent and a sweater for the evening, then the issue is settled.
What you get in return: a 50-hectare garden, free of charge, where wild raspberries grow along the paths. The smell of warm conifers when the thermometer reaches 25 degrees.
Sunsets that really take their time — the clouds glow pink over the hills of Tiveden, and an hour and a half later you’re still sitting outside on the veranda.
The unique acoustics of the coniferous forest — where a conversation between three people is the loudest thing within a kilometer.
And a kind of mental reset that Swedes quietly talk about, but take for granted. It is not peace of mind. It is something more useful. It is the moment when the brain stops simulating the next meeting and actually arrives in the evening you are in.
That is why you come here. And that is why you come back.

Mr. M. Eriksson
Hello! I am Martin Eriksson and take care of the rental of Valtrets skola. The school belongs to me together with a few good friends. School lessons were held here until 2007 — after that, the building was closed to the public and housed a private IT company. Since 2020, we have been renting out the whole house to groups. I live right next door, so I’m usually quick to help if you need anything — whether it’s handing over the keys, a question about the large kitchen stove, or a tip on the best hiking spots in Tiveden. I’m really happy to help you, and I’ll do it in my best German. If I ever forget a word, just laugh along with me — we’ll manage just fine. Feel free to write me in advance if you have any special requests or need help with planning. I look forward to welcoming you in Undenäs.
