18th-Century Normandy Stay

Valognes

Beautiful, atmospheric 18th C house in a lovely tranquil rural setting in a beautiful part of Normandy, with all mod cons and overall good value.
Be aware however that there are optional hidden costs e.g. for heating, wood for burning and bed linen (we brought our own), if required, and you need to bring your own towels (you pay the landlady directly for those costs at the end of your stay). The French landlady is very nice - French is the only language spoken (not a problem for us, but non French speakers should bear that in mind). There is so much to see & do in the area, even in mid winter, and we had a lovely stay with our dog (keep dogs under control as there are hares and deer in the area).
The booking process was however quite confusing, as the property rental appears to be managed by 2 booking agencies, Holidu and Belvilla, so you get lots of confusing emails from both and in addition to the aforementioned hidden costs there is also a very unclear so called 'optional fee' of €60 for 'utilities & cleaning' which is not actually optional at all as you don't get your booking voucher (needed to confirm the booking) from the online booking agency until you pay it, and it's not included in the price shown on the rental advert.
All in all we had a wonderful stay and loved the place and hope to return, but the booking agents really need to get their act together and decide who is managing this property, Holidu or Belvilla, and be a bit more transparent at advertising stage about the actual cost and what it does and does not include.
So 5 stars out of 5 for the house and actual holiday experience, but 3 for the booking experience.
