What do you need to experience in Saintes Maries de la Mer?
Two Marys and Sara – Saintes Maries as a pilgrimage destination
The Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer church in the village center dates back to the early Middle Ages. In the 14th century, it was converted into a fortified church. The (alleged) relics of the two saints, Mary of Clopas and Mary Salome, were found in the 15th century. The cult of Mary was banned during the French Revolution, and the church was severely damaged but later restored in the 19th century. The pilgrimage in honor of the Marys takes place on May 24 and 25. In October, there is a pilgrimage in honor of the Black Sara, patron saint of the Gitans, the Spanish-descended Roma people. A small museum in the village, located in the house of Marquis de Baroncelli, focuses on the cultural history of the region and displays old furniture, tools, and artifacts. The arena for French bullfighting (in which the bull does not die) dates back to the 1930s.

Where can I eat out in Saintes Maries de la Mer?
À la provençale – Eating like a god in southern France
The name suffix "à la provençale" – in the style of Provence – has become internationally established for many southern French dishes. Fresh vegetables such as tomatoes, eggplants, zucchini, bell peppers, and garlic, as well as olive oil and, of course, the proverbial Provençal herbs, including rosemary, thyme, savory, and oregano, are characteristic of the cuisine. These ingredients are used to flavor vegetable, fish, and meat dishes. Bouillabaisse, one of the most famous fish soups, originally comes from Marseille and features fish such as scorpionfish, John Dory, sea bream, anglerfish, and gurnard. It is served with baguette and rouille. A Camargue specialty is the meat of black bulls (Viande Taureau de Camargue AOC), and the stew Gardianne de Taureau is slow-cooked for several hours over low heat. The dish is typically accompanied by red rice from the region. Fleur du Sel, the hand-harvested salt flowers from the salt pans, make an excellent souvenir. Red, white, and especially rosé wines from the region between Avignon and the Maritime Alps are popular with the French and have steadily increased in quality over the past decades.
