Between Kalkberg and the Great Segeberger Lake
Around your affordable vacation home or cozy private apartment, there are numerous sights and attractions in the city and surrounding area to explore. Start your tour in the spa park of Kalkberg and take a deep breath in the cave of the mountain, which offers 100 percent humidity, especially providing relief to those with asthma. Kalkberg is a 91-meter-high rock in the center of Bad Segeberg, which, contrary to its name, is composed of gypsum near the surface and unweathered anhydrite at its core. Nature lovers should visit the Noctalis exhibition. Discover the world of bats across 560 square meters. The world of bats "Noctalis" is the only bat center in Europe. Near Kalkberg stands the distinctive water tower, built at the beginning of the last century and now used as a residence. The Segeberger water tower was constructed between 1907 and 1910. Each year, the Karl May Festival Bad Segeberg stages an open-air theater play based on a template by Karl May at the Kalkberg Stadium in Bad Segeberg. In the old town hall in Biedermeier style, the writer Theodor Storm once married his cousin Constanze, the daughter of the then mayor of Segeberg. The Marienkirche in the city center of Bad Segeberg is a brick basilica in Romanesque style. The Marienkirche is the oldest three-aisled vaulted basilica of brick Romanesque in Northern Elbia. A visit to the Great Segeberger Lake invites you to stroll along the spa promenade and enjoy the outdoor pools in the city area and at Klein Rönnau during the summer months. There are several fishing clubs and boat rentals on the lake. Numerous hiking trails around the lake and in the nature reserves Ihlsee and Ihlwald invite you to walk, hike, and cycle. Not to mention the regular events in Bad Segeberg, especially the Karl May Games, which have been attracting thousands of visitors annually since the 1950s. The festival became famous partly due to the Frenchman Pierre Brice in the role of Winnetou. Also worth seeing is the Old Segeberger Citizens' House, known since the end of the 19th century as the oldest house in the city of Segeberg. The Siegesburg was, alongside Flensburg and Plön, one of the three largest hilltop castles in Schleswig-Holstein. The castle site was located up to the former summit on the ascending back of Kalkberg in Bad Segeberg and was the namesake for today's city.

Fish, Ham, and the Famous Schwarzsauer
Schleswig-Holstein is a land between two seas. Consequently, fresh fish tops the menus in restaurants: flounder and plaice, cod, sole, pike, as well as mackerel, herring, and eel – fried with bacon, boiled with mustard sauce, or smoked. A specialty for meat lovers is Holstein Katenschinken – best from the historic smokehouses with traditional thatched roofs that allow good ventilation. A unique dish from Schleswig-Holstein is Schwarzsauer, a slaughter broth made from blood, belly meat, snout, and trotters of pigs. Schwarzsauer is eaten either warm or as a cold soup. Flour dumplings, applesauce, or dried fruit are served as sides. Connoisseurs sprinkle a spoonful of sugar on top. This is not unusual in Schleswig-Holstein. Those who enjoy cooking in their own accommodation in Segeberg will find plenty of fresh and regional ingredients in the many farm shops and local markets. A cool bottle of "Flens," the local beer from Flensburg, pairs excellently with it.
