What do you need to experience in Sarnen?
Travel back in time to the founding of the Swiss Confederation
Numerous attractions are waiting to be explored around your holiday apartment in Sarnen. The so-called Witch Tower is located on the banks of the Sarner Aa and dates back to the Swiss Confederation's founding in the 13th century. The tower was used as a prison and housed interrogations and treasures. Today, the Obwalden State Archives are located here. On the village square, various interesting destinations can be found, such as the Landenberg, the former seat of the bailiffs and the Obwalden cantonal assembly between the 17th and 20th centuries. The square is also home to the Historical Museum of Obwalden, housed in a former barracks, and the Grundacherhaus, dating back to the late 16th century and housing the Cantonal Library. The former ballroom, adorned with intricately decorated ceilings and walls, now serves as a reading room for the library. One of the most beautiful parish churches in the country is St. Peter and Paul in the Kirchhofen district. This late Baroque church enchants visitors with its stunning location above Lake Sarnen. Inside, impressive ceiling paintings, stucco work, and wood carvings on the pulpit, choir, and pews can be admired. The history of the women's monastery of St. Andreas dates back to the 12th century. Sister Rut-Maria Buschor has gained attention in recent years as a columnist for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ).

Where can I eat out in Sarnen?
Dining is as essential to Switzerland as the mountains
Swiss cuisine varies depending on the canton, but one thing is common to all regional kitchens: they must be "währschaft," meaning satisfying and straightforward. The most famous examples of this are the well-known cheese fondue and raclette. Fondue uses various types of cheese (such as a combination of Gruyère and Vacherin), white wine, some fruit brandy (not too much!), and garlic. Be careful not to let your bread or potato pieces fall into the cheese soup when dipping, or else you'll owe everyone a round! Swiss wines make an excellent accompaniment. For example, try a Petite Arvine or Müller-Thurgau from Valais or a Riesling from Graubünden or a slightly chilled Merlot from Ticino.
