It takes place on the Sunday before Shrove Monday and features competitions in which masked riders have to pierce a suspended star. Many more folk festivals take place all over the island. For example, there is the fire festival Sant'Antonio Abate. It is held every year on the night of January 16th to 17th in several towns on Sardinia. On this night, the carnival begins, and costumed people dance around the fire. They ask for a merciful spring, good weather, and a good harvest.
