Unlike many other German cities, Nuremberg decided after the destructions of World War II (almost 90 percent of the old building substance was destroyed) to restore the character of the Old Town. To this day, the historical center houses testimonies of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Reconstruction, modernity, and postmodernity are in dialogue with the old building substance. The city's landmark is the Imperial Castle, which has towered over the city for centuries. It was built by Conrad III and Frederick Barbarossa. From there, you can enjoy a panoramic view over the Old Town with the churches St. Sebald (built between 1230 and 1275), St. Lorenz, and the Frauenkirche. The White Tower, like the Sebaldus Church, also dates back to the 13th century.
In Nuremberg, deciding on THE highlights of the city is truly difficult. Is it the Imperial Castle or the medieval Frauenkirche, the Sebaldus Church, or the Dürer House? Or perhaps the Toy Museum or the Christkindlmarkt? Each of the Nuremberg attractions certainly has its rightful place on this list. To experience the character of the historic city, a visit to Weißgerbergasse with its old original half-timbered houses is recommended. The lovingly restored pedestrian zone does not immediately reveal that until the middle of the last century there was no sewage system here. In addition, there were the smells of the craft businesses, the tanners, who tanned animal hides here. Today, cozy inns and cafes line up, inviting you to linger and enjoy.
For children, there is much to discover in the vicinity of your holiday home in Nuremberg and its surroundings. Since the 1970s, the Nuremberg Toy Museum (also Museum Lydia Bayer) has been considered one of the most famous toy museums in the world. The cultural history of toys and play is presented "in a playful way" for young and old on an exhibition area of over 1,400 square meters from antiquity to the present. The museum's collection includes nearly 90,000 objects, some of which can be viewed online. An adventure not only for children is an "expedition" into the underworld of Nuremberg's historic rock passages. It goes through winding and gloomy corridors and vaults, through cellars and halls. Beer was once produced and stored here. During World War II, the passages were used as bunkers. Those who want to spend a vacation with a dog in Nuremberg and its surroundings will find plenty of nature around the city with hiking and biking trails up to the Franconian Switzerland.
Throughout Bavaria, the food is hearty and delicious. The hallmarks of Nuremberg cuisine are the famous Nuremberg sausages and Nuremberg gingerbread. The small pork sausages are available locally in incredible quality. The typical spices are salt, pepper, and marjoram. Typically, the sausages in Nuremberg are consumed in multiples of three – three, six, nine, or even twelve sausages. "Drei im Weggla" means three sausages in a bun. A variant is cooking the sausages in vinegar broth with onion rings, carrots, bay leaves, and juniper berries. The sausages cooked in the broth are found as "Saure Zipfel" or "Blaue Zipfel" on the menus. Another popular meat dish is "Schäufele" – pork shoulder with crispy rind. It is served with dumplings, sauerkraut, red cabbage, or savoy cabbage. The Franconian sauerbraten, unlike the Rhineland version, is refined with gingerbread instead of raisins. Unusual is "Schwaaß," a baked blood dish, especially available in Upper Franconia. The famous Nuremberg gingerbread originated from the trade with exotic spices in the city. Finally, let's mention Franconian wine and beer. Nuremberg is part of the "Beer Franconia" region, which supposedly has the highest brewery density in the world. Good restaurateurs keep a Silvaner in a Bocksbeutel from "Wine Franconia" for wine lovers. One of the most beautiful moments to enjoy Nuremberg specialties is at the Christmas Christkindlmarkt.
Nuremberg is a significant museum location in Germany with one of the highest numbers of museums per capita. There are municipal, state, and private museums – listing them all would overwhelm this overview. Here is a small selection: There is the Kunsthalle, the Kunstverein, and the Kunstvilla Nuremberg, a Children's & Youth Museum, a Museum in a Suitcase, the Kaiserburg Museum, and the Germanic National Museum. One of the most famous houses is dedicated to the painter Albrecht Dürer, who is closely associated with the history of the castle. The exhibition rooms are located in an original medieval residential house where the artist lived and worked until his death in 1528. The Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds deals with the era of National Socialist tyranny. It is located in the unfinished Congress Hall.
Nuremberg is located in Central Franconia in the Free State of Bavaria on both banks of the Pegnitz.
