One of the most popular attractions during a holiday with a holiday home or apartment is Monte San Giorgio. You can take a cable car to the highest heights and enjoy the breathtaking view of the surroundings. However, the mountain is even more famous for its fossil finds and has therefore been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003. The most famous specimens include more than 100 ichthyosaurs Mixosaurus. A large part of the finds is exhibited in the Palaeontological Museum in Zurich. In the Fossil Museum of Meride, you will find further excavation pieces and replicas. It is not for nothing that Monte San Girorgio is also called the "Mountain of Dinosaurs". The city of Lugano is another great excursion destination. It is the largest city in Ticino and is charmingly located between Monte Salvatore, Monte Bre, and Lake Lugano. In the historic old town, you can visit museums, churches, or old townhouses. The popular meeting point Piazza della Riforma is where most of the inner-city streets converge. At the northeastern end of the old town, you can relax and take a walk in Parco Civico. Here you will find exotic plants as well as impressive sculptures. In the center of the huge garden is Villa Ciani, an exhibition room of the city museum and a gallery for contemporary art. In Italy, pasta is, of course, very popular: ravioli, tortellini, or agnolotti. In the area of the lake, however, risotto is also a regular hit. Many of the lakes border the large fields of Piedmont and Lombardy, the largest rice-growing area in Europe. During the carnival season, the villages in the canton of Ticino invite you to risottata, when risotto is cooked in huge pots on the piazza. From September, porcini is very popular with the locals: rice with porcini mushrooms. But sweet dishes such as tiramisu, panna cotta, gelato (ice cream), or crostata (shortcrust pastry tart with jam) are always enjoyed.
