Which sights are there in the old country?

Where the Apple Trees Bloom

Altes Land is an ancient fruit-growing area in a dreamlike landscape between marshes, moors, and the Elbe. Magnificent half-timbered houses and fruit farms with their typical so-called ornate gates have always testified to the prosperity of its inhabitants and are among the top attractions of the region. This balanced mix of old culture and nature guarantees you and your family a relaxing vacation. Take a trip to one of the Altländer fruit farms in the municipality of Jork and try the specialties that the Altländer create from apples. Visit the Altländer fruit farm in Jork, which invites you daily for a tour and tasting. Among the attractions in Altes Land are the old towns of Jork and Stade. If you have rented a vacation apartment or house in Stade, then the historic Schwedenspeicher, which has been converted into a museum, should be on your sightseeing plan. The old churches in the historic city centers have beautiful medieval and baroque original furnishings and are famous for their organ concerts.

What do you need to experience in the old country?

Hanseatic Cities of Stade, Buxtehude, and Don't Forget the Apple Blossom!

Experience the highlight of the vacation region: the apple blossom in May. The intoxicating fragrance and breathtaking sight of the venerable fruit farms submerged in a sea of blossoms leave unforgettable impressions. During this time, you are well advised to book your vacation apartment or house for several people in advance. The Hanseatic cities of Stade and Buxtehude are located in the middle of this magnificent landscape and are definitely worth a visit. Here, you can immerse yourself in the impressive Hanseatic history and walk on the ancient cobblestones of the narrow alleys. Visit the ancient churches and let the charm of the gabled houses adorned with brick Gothic and thatched half-timbered houses affect you. Small boutiques, beautiful cafes, or traditional restaurants invite you to linger. Agathenburg Castle, once home to the powerful noble family of Königsmarck, is another highlight of the region. If you have not already rented a vacation apartment in Jork, then a detour to the "secret capital" of Altes Land with its quaint old houses and the town hall from the 12th century is worthwhile. A beautiful day trip for hikers and vacationers with dogs is the nearby Lüneburg Heath.

What can you experience in the old country with children?

Vacation on the Elbe Dike for Beach Lovers and Dogs

Spend your best days of the year with the whole family in one of the top-equipped vacation apartments or houses overlooking the Elbe. Cozy privately-owned houses can be found in Hollern-Twielenfleth, where you can look forward to the large heated outdoor pool. Altes Land is a secret tip for guests seeking a peaceful beach vacation in Lower Saxony. Enjoy the two-kilometer-long sheltered sandy beach in Hollern-Twielenfleth or head over to the Elbinsel Krautsand with its magnificent beach. The extensive Elbe dike takes you to numerous attractions, which you can reach by bike, on inline skates, or on foot. Many Altländer rent well-maintained accommodations to guests traveling with a dog. Dog-friendly vacation homes located near nature reserves between marshes, the Elbe River, and fruit plantations make your vacation with a dog in Altes Land perfect. Children will enjoy a trip to the Wildpark Schwarze Berge located south of the city of Hamburg. Here, you'll find a beautiful area with many free-roaming animals. Altes Land guarantees you a healthy vacation in cozy accommodations with gardens or in the countryside, well connected to well-developed bike paths and hiking trails that lead you straight to the most beautiful attractions. If you like to cycle a bit further, you can take your bike back to your vacation apartment on the train or on the convenient Elbe Cycle Bus.

Where can I eat out in the old country?

Apple as a Specialty

The heart of Altes Land are the fruit farms and the apple. It's no surprise that the cuisine of Altes Land features all kinds of apple specialties. These include apple carpaccio with Altländer smoked ham, Cordon Bleu with apple filling, and various apple pans. Apple wines or cool North German beers taste best with these dishes. For dessert or just as a snack, you should try the deliciously tasty apple cake with and without crumbles. Heavenly delights include apple sour cream cake and deep-fried apple rings. Don't forget to try the "liquid apple": the many healthy apple juices and the tasty fruit brandies.

What is a must-see in the old country?

Rural and Hanseatic – Culture of Altes Land

Altes Land offers you a rich cultural life with many music events, theater, and art exhibitions. The most famous and for many the most beautiful festival of the region is the Blossom Festival, which takes place annually on the first weekend of May. Be welcomed by the beautifully crowned Blossom Queen and enjoy the festive atmosphere of this special event. July beckons with the equally traditionally celebrated Cherry Week, while the months from September to November welcome you with the apple harvest and the Altländer Apple Days. It is the best time to learn all about this round delicacy and to get to know the old fruit farms on (bicycle) tours during the Open Farm Day. Rent a vacation home near the beautiful marina of Jork and look forward to a medieval spectacle of a special kind. In May, Jork's festival meadow transforms into a Viking village with over 200 round tents surrounding the historic ring fort. Here, a hearty celebration takes place with much spectacle while traders from near and far present beautiful art objects.

How do I come to Altes Land?

Your Vacation Apartment in Altes Land: Easily Accessible by Train

Altes Land is located in Lower Saxony and stretches south from Stade to Hamburg-Altenwerder. From here, it's just a stone's throw to the Port of Hamburg or the center of the Hanseatic city Hamburg. A long dike separates Altes Land from the wide Elbe River and the protected Elbe islands: Krautsand, Hahnöfersand, Neßsand, Hanskalbsand, and Lühesand. These islands are ideal for a short trip for swimming, hiking, and relaxing. In this beautiful old cultural landscape, you will find many vacation apartments and houses available for rent from private owners. If you want to spend a wonderful vacation in the countryside amidst the fruit trees with your dog, there are pet-friendly and cozy vacation apartments on fruit farms available. Highways A 7 from Hamburg and Hanover, as well as A 27 from the north and A 1 from the west, bring you quickly to your vacation apartment or house on the Elbe. Alternatively, you can travel stress-free and environmentally friendly by train. You can reach your vacation home with just one ticket from the Hamburg Transport Association (HVV), which also includes EVB trains to and from Cuxhaven and Bremerhaven. Group tickets are also available for several people. Long-distance trains of the Deutsche Bahn stop in Hamburg-Harburg, from where you can transfer to the S-Bahn or the Metronom to Altes Land. Long-distance bus companies offer particularly inexpensive routes to Stade or the Hanseatic city of Buxtehude. They are a good choice for vacations with multiple people. Many landlords offer vacation apartments and houses in Altes Land that can accommodate four to six people. If you have rented a multi-person vacation home in a quiet location away from the towns, you can use the practical call-and-collect taxis (AST).
