Sights within walking distance
You do not need a car for your stay in Silves. Everything is within walking distance of your accommodation: Castle of Silves (Castelo de Silves): This impressive red sandstone castle towers high above the city. It is one of the best-preserved Moorish forts in Portugal. From the castle walls you can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view over the city and the surrounding orange groves. Cathedral of Silves (Sé de Silves): Directly next to the castle stands this beautiful Gothic cathedral, built in the 13th century on the site of an old mosque. The red-and-white façade is a recognizable symbol of the city.
Municipal Archaeological Museum (Museu Municipal de Arqueologia): This archaeological museum is built around an impressive, eight-meter-deep Moorish water well (cistern) from the 12th century and displays the centuries-old history of the region. Ponte Romana (The Roman Bridge): An idyllic pedestrian bridge over the Arade River. Perfect for an evening stroll at sunset with a beautiful view of the illuminated city.
Mercado Municipal: The market hall where you can find fresh fish, regional vegetables, fruit, and the famous sweet oranges from the area every morning (except on Sunday).
