Description

Polyhymnia was created for artists and lovers of art. With its exceptional interior design and its idyllic location in the countryside, just a few minutes from the nearest town, it is a place of pure inspiration. It is certain that many happy souls will find a source of deep enjoyment in Polyhymnia.

Villa features

Villa Polyhymnia is located on an 816 m² plot with a north-south orientation. It borders the village of Vrbanj and is located in an extremely quiet, almost meditative place. To the north, only a few houses adjoin, to the east a single building, while the south and west sides are surrounded by forest.

The parking spaces as well as the access to the property are located on the northeastern side of the house and are deliberately screened so that they do not impair the view or the aesthetics of the villa. All paths and terraces of Villa Polyhymnia are paved with natural stone and surrounded by gardens with Mediterranean herbs. Two garden areas around the pool are decorated with wooden sculptures. The property extends over two levels:
The northwestern, lower level houses the pool with sun deck and outdoor shower, while the higher southwestern level features a beautiful 35 m² pavilion with a summer kitchen (fully equipped with refrigerator, dishwasher, induction cooktop, and electric grill) as well as a dining table.

The two levels are connected by a staircase. The entire property is surrounded by a traditional Mediterranean dry stone wall, which guarantees guests a high level of privacy.

The villa offers a total of 290 m² of living space and consists of a ground floor (120 m²), a gallery on the first floor (approx. 100 m²), as well as an additional gallery room.

Interior

The main entrance is located on the east side of the villa and leads into the ground floor with dining area, living room (approx. 80 m²), an open kitchen, and a hallway that leads to the study and the guest WC.

Living room, study, and kitchen are only a few steps away from the pool with sun deck. The ground floor is connected to the gallery by an apparently floating staircase – one of our favorite details. Once upstairs, there is a small lounge next to an anteroom, from which a metal staircase leads to a charming 12 m² room. This is located at the very top under the roof, has a skylight, a double bed, and a television, and faces west. From the anteroom you also reach a 6 m² bathroom with bathtub.

From the gallery you reach two more bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The bedrooms are each approx. 20 m², the bathrooms approx. 7 m². Each room is equipped with a spacious double bed (200 × 220 cm), built-in wardrobe, bedside tables, and television. The bathrooms feature a bathtub, two sinks, bidet, and toilet.

The study is furnished with a sofa (which can be used as an extra bed if needed), a desk with a computer, and a television. From here, you can access the ground floor bathroom with sink, shower, bidet, and toilet. The walls are lined with bookshelves and a large collection of old cameras. Caution: Anyone who becomes interested in the details of these cameras can easily lose track of time. The study conveys more the feeling of a private home than that of a holiday house.

The kitchen is excellently equipped: double-door refrigerator, microwave, oven, dishwasher, ceramic cooktop, coffee machine, ice maker, juicer, and all other necessary appliances – the furnishings throughout the entire villa are consistently of the highest standard.

In the basement, which is accessible from the south side, there are a washing machine and dryer. The property also features video surveillance, so you can sleep completely relaxed.

Design, Art & Technology

Polyhymnia was completed in 2019 and is one of the most exclusive villas on Hvar. The bathrooms are fitted with epoxy resin floors, high-quality ceramic tiles have been laid throughout the house, and the walls are painted with ecological Oikos paint. Elegant designer lights emphasize the high-quality furnishings. The entire interior – especially the artistically designed staircase railing and the gallery, which appears like a sculpture – was created specifically for this villa. The interior is a geometric play that both soothes and invigorates. High-quality carpets in vibrant colors add playful accents to the otherwise modern-minimalist space, which is dominated by elegant neutral tones such as gray, brown, black, and white.

Location and surroundings of object

The quiet and peaceful village of Vrbanj is located in the heart of the island of Hvar. The village dates back to Roman times, and finds from that era testify that the people of Vrbanj already knew how to enjoy life to the fullest: two olive presses and remains of a leisure villa were found in the village.

The name of the village was mentioned for the first time in the first half of the 14th century. The origin of the name Vrbanj comes from the Croatian word for willow (vrba). Vrbanj reached its economic peak in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, when the majority of the population focused on shipping and shipbuilding. This is actually rather unexpected, since the village is not located near the sea. In the 15th century, the inhabitants of Vrbanj moved to the coast because they expected greater income from the fishing industry. They settled the area that was originally called "Vallis Varbagni" and later blossomed into the town of Vrboska.

At the beginning of the 16th century, a civil uprising occurred, the most remarkable historical event connected with Vrbanj. The leader of the citizens was Matija Ivanić from Vrbanj. It all began with the citizens’ desire to participate in decision-making processes. Their goal was also to end the violent tyranny of the nobles, which was directed against the citizens. The citizens' uprising was therefore a social revolution that preceded the famous French Revolution. And although it ended badly for the citizens, the inhabitants of Vrbanj today are very proud of their ancestors' role in the rebellion. In commemoration of this event, the "House of Matija Ivanić" in the center of Vrbanj was dedicated to all the rebels from Hvar.

Also in the center of present-day Vrbanj is the Church of the Holy Spirit (Sv. Duh) from the 18th century. century, which still proudly possesses various Baroque paintings and liturgical silver objects.

Vrbanj today has fewer than 500 inhabitants. Agriculture is the most important economic sector.

Although it is small, the village has everything you need: cafés, a few grocery stores, and a post office. Right in the neighborhood there is an excellent restaurant called Bogo and other interesting authentic restaurants in the villages of Pitve and Vrisnik, not far from Vrbanj. The winemaker Plančić, whose wine tasting center is located directly in the village, makes Vrbanj a "must".

The most beautiful and authentic Dalmatian konoba is very well hidden in the village of Vrbanj. It is the best-preserved konoba on the entire island, owned by the multi-talented Miki Bratanić. The konoba is an important, almost indispensable part of every traditional Dalmatian stone house. Even today, many of them are used for wine production and storage, as well as for keeping agricultural tools. In old times, the konoba was an important meeting place: family and friends could gather there to enjoy good food and homemade wine together, and occasionally hum a folk song or two. The konoba is teeming with old treasures: grape and olive presses, various glasses, bottles and goatskin, old wooden storage barrels in different sizes as well as modern stainless steel barrels. This makes our konoba a kind of magnificent time machine.

The owner Miki, who is also a dialect poet, has good wine and excellent prosecco. His prosecco from the 2010 vintage was named after the aforementioned hero from Vrbanj, Matija Ivanić, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the uprising. If you would like to visit Mikis Konoba, remember to call in advance.

We strongly recommend visiting the nearby Stari Grad Plain, also known as Ager and Hora. In 2008, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Stari Grad Plain is a unique and amazingly well-preserved cadastral plan from antiquity. The best way to discover this cultural sensation is by bicycle. The nearest larger towns are Jelsa and Stari Grad (5 km), and the nearest beach is in Vrboska (4 km). If you enjoy being outdoors and walking in beautiful nature, head towards Jelsa and in about 15 minutes you will reach the charming wine village of Svirce. If you follow the old road towards Stari Grad, you will reach the picturesque village of Dol in about 20 minutes. If you would like to take a trip to the city of Hvar, the mecca for tourists (approx. 23 km away), or if you want to visit the beaches on the south side of the island (approx. 16 km away), you will definitely need a car. If you are arriving without a car, you can rent one at any time in our agency.
