Gallipoli overlooks the Ionian Sea, on the western coast of the Salento peninsula. The city of Gallipoli is divided into two parts, the "Borgo" and the Historic Centre.

The Borgo is the most recent part of the city, built on a peninsula that extends into the Ionian Sea towards the west, which includes all the new constructions, such as the glass palace.

The Historic Centre, on the other hand, is located on a limestone origin island, connected to the mainland through a seventeenth-century arched bridge. Of considerable historical and natural importance is the Island of Sant'Andrea, about a mile offshore from the historic centre.
