The Cévennes
South of the Massif Central in the south of France lies the fantastic Cévennes National Park (Parc National des Cévennes), a unique protected area with large mountain ranges, unforgettable landscapes, lush nature and an eventful history.
A pristine landscape of mountains and valleys has been created here from rocks and water, offering hikers the most marvellous excursions on all sorts of seldom-trodden paths.
The landscape of the Cévennes
From a geological point of view, the Cévennes are an ancient mountain range. However, 200 million years ago, the landscape was still covered by the sea and the sea left behind layers of limestone that are up to 1500 metres thick in places. The rivers carved deep gorges into these limestone plateaus, the "causses", creating the unique landscape of the Cévennes.
No matter where you turn your steps, you will be enchanted by this beautiful, idiosyncratic region.
Rivers, cliffs, caves, forests and heathland alternate vividly with small, picturesque Cévennes houses, their slate roofs covered in orange lichen above the light grey limestone walls.
There are some beautiful and unforgettable caves to visit. There is the pink grotto "Dargilan" full of shimmering stalagmites. In the "Aven Armand" cave, a cable car takes you almost 200 metres down into the caves, and in the "Grotte des Demoiselles" you can take a cable car down into the earth to attend a midnight mass among the stalactites and stalagmites.
On the "Chassezac" river, which flows very close to our holiday flat, you can kayak through the gorges and admire the rock formations up close. Other exciting excursions are the tour to the famous bamboo forest near Prafrance or to the "Bois de Paiolive" with its bizarre rock formations created by corrosion of the dolomite rock.
To get a magnificent overview of the whole area, you can climb one of the highest mountains in the region, the Serre de Barre, which is within view from the holiday flat. From the viewpoint at the summit, you can follow an easy path that winds its way down through the magnificent chestnut forest on the north side of the mountain through the Cévennes.
Whether you go hiking, climbing, horse riding, rafting, canoeing, kayaking or cycling, fly an ultralight aircraft or stay in your car - the Cévennes landscape is always a challenge and also an unforgettable experience. In early summer, the meadows are ablaze with broom, lilies and orchids. In September, the forest glows in the autumnal colours of the chestnut groves.
