Maruggio is a small town in the Province of Taranto in PUGLIA, located in a pleasant valley full of olive groves and vineyards at the foot of the Murge Tarantine, two kilometers from the Ionian Sea. The village was founded in the Middle Ages between the 9th and 10th centuries and its history was characterized by the presence of the Knights Templar first and then by the Knights of Malta. Especially the latter, in their uninterrupted rule for five centuries from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century, enriched the country from an artistic point of view. The historic centre, which still tells the story of the glorious past of the town today, presents itself today as a small maze of alleys along which the numerous historical-artistic testimonies of the village overlook, including the mighty Mother Church, the Palazzo dei Commendatori, the Clock Tower and a whole series of elegant buildings decorated with balconies and loggias in Baroque style and small whitewashed houses. Precisely because of the richness of the historical-artistic heritage of Maruggio, the town has been included among the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy".
