The cherry and university town of Witzenhausen lies charmingly embedded in the romantic Werra Valley and is the centre of one of the largest and oldest cherry-growing areas in Germany. The attractive old town with its valuable half-timbered buildings bears witness to medieval culture and architecture. Witzenhausen has succeeded in preserving the old and opening up to the new. For example, the smallest university town in Germany is home to the University of Kassel with its Department of Ecological Agricultural Sciences, the first of its kind in Europe.

Visitors to Witzenhausen will also find a wide range of sports, fun and fitness in the mineral water outdoor pool, tennis, squash, horse riding, bowling, mini golf or gliding. Well-marked cycle paths such as the "Werratal-Radweg" lead to the beauties of the cherry country, extensive boat trips on the Werra leisurely through it.
In addition, friends of a "good drop" will get their money's worth when enjoying the sour cherry wine at a stop in one of the numerous well-kept inns or the popular wine tastings. The beer specialities of the local private brewery are just as popular.
The symbol of the town, the cherry, has determined the course of the year for more than a century and a half. The cherry blossom is certainly also a special experience for visitors to Witzenhausen Week, especially during the walks along the specially designated cherry blossom paths. To celebrate the cherry harvest, the big Cherry and Old Town Festival takes place on the second weekend in July. Many visitors flock to the town for the Kesperkirmes (dialect kesper = cherry) to welcome the newly crowned cherry queen or to take part in the "cherry stone spitting" championships. Worldwide, the name of Witzenhausen is closely associated not only with the cherry but also with the university, whose attractions include the greenhouse for tropical and subtropical crops. Thanks to modern technology, cocoa, coffee, lemons, oranges, bananas and many more exotic plants thrive here. The greenhouse is not only a place of teaching and research, but is also open to interested guests. On the same grounds, housed in a stylish half-timbered building, is the ethnological museum. Numerous exhibits from different cultures show the diversity of human life today and in the past. But the town with its historic half-timbered houses and old walls is also worth seeing and always worth a long stroll.
