Location and surroundings of object

On the edge of the village of Tripiti (200 metres walk to the village road) on the side facing the gulf with magnificent views of the gulf of Milos and the fishing village of Klima. Milos, in the southwest of the Cyclades, 155 km2. A colourfully varied landscape around a picturesque gulf, numerous very clean sandy beaches and a diverse geology characterise this island.
Especially the long south coast and the north-east of the island have, in addition to the beaches around the gulf, dozens of beautiful sandy beaches, from well-visited beaches with refreshment bars to completely secluded bathing bays.
The island is divided by its gulf into two almost equal halves, a gentle flat east and an almost uninhabited west with elevations up to 750 metres. Almost all of the 5000 inhabitants live in the north-east of the island. Above the small harbour and tourist town of Adamas are five villages, including Tripiti, the most interesting village on the island, which towers over the gulf with its many windmills, the famous catacombs and an old Roman theatre.
In the north-east of the island is the fishing village of Pollonia. From Adamas, a very beautiful road with numerous dreamlike bathing bays leads on the left hand side the 9 km to Pollonia. From its tiny harbour, a car ferry departs three times a day in spring/autumn and five times a day in summer to the opposite island of Kimolos (35 km2, 700 inhabitants). The crossing takes half an hour. Kimolos is a pristine and untouched Cycladic island. It has a few clean bathing bays, a main village worth seeing with a medieval castro and a quaint friendly population.

A curiosity on Milos are the remote, tiny fishing villages of Klima (photo below), Skinopi, Areti, Mandrakia, Fyropotamos and Agios Konstantinos with their boat garages, originally only accessible from the sea. The first two can be reached by land from Tripiti on narrow tracks.

Milos is rich in mineral resources and has therefore been inhabited since the middle Stone Age. Open-cast mining, which is still an important economic factor on Milos today, has left clear traces in some areas in the south-east and south-west of the island, without affecting the beauty of the bathing areas and villages.

From the port of Adamas, ships sail directly to Piraeus and Crete, but also to the other western Cyclades Kimolos, Sifnos, Serifos and Kithnos, as well as to Paros and Santorini.

Milos also has a small airport. In principle, there are several daily flights to/from Athens; flight time 30 min. From Adamas to the airfield it is 4 kilometres. There is no noise pollution associated with the airfield. At present (November 2004), however, there is only one Olympic Airlines flight per day from Athens to Milos and vice versa.
