Roseto degli Abruzzi , Abruzzo , Italy

Where it is Roseto degli Abruzzi is located in central Italy, opposite Gran Sasso, to the north of the mouth of the Vomano River, and is the main town of Vallata del Vomano. It is part of the region of Abruzzo and is in the province of Teramo, 32 kilometres away. Why you should visit Roseto, characterised by sandy beaches washed by the Adriatic and dense pine woods, is full of natural beauty and artistic treasures. One of the most popular resorts on the Abruzzo coast, it offers a healthy climate and warm atmosphere. Thanks to its beach and well-equipped beachfront as well as numerous tourism facilities and hotels, it offers many possibilities for fun and relaxation for tourists of all ages. Also known as the “Lido delle Rose”, it has been awarded the EC Blue Flag for its clean water since 1999. When to go there and why The best time for visiting Roseto degli Abruzzi is definitely summertime, when you can relax and swim along all of the 10 kilometres of coast, as well as have fun thanks to the numerous activities and sports offered. What there is to see Roseto degli Abruzzi, once called Rosburgo, “the town of roses”, has 5 beach concessions and a well-equipped pleasure boat harbour, which make it a popular, trendy resort. In addition to its sandy beaches and dense pine forests, there are numerous sports facilities, including an Olympic pool, tennis courts (including covered), a municipal stadium, five a side football fields, a lawn bowling area and roller skating rink. The centre of the city is home to the Arena 4 Palme, where an important international basketball tournament is held each year. Not just the sea. The Municipal art collection (civica raccolta d’arte) can be visited in Roseto to admire sculptures, local handcrafts and modern paintings. Noteworthy works by Roseto’s artists are also displayed, including painters Pasquale, Raffaello and Luigi Celommi, potter Pier Giuseppe Di Blasio and cabinet-maker Antonio De Simone. The collection is located in the Municipal Hall (Villa Comunale) built at the end of the 19th century, surrounded by an age-old park, which is also home to a library dedicated to performance and dialectology, a video library and newspaper library. C facts about Roseto include a supposedly 500 year old olive tree and a cask at the Villa Mazzarosa De Vincenzi winery, which contains 1000 hectolitres of wine, believed to be the biggest in Europe. Room with a view Roseto offers the possibility of staying in pleasant hotels of all categories with good restaurants where specialties of Abruzzo’s cuisine are offered. There are numerous well-equipped campgrounds and flats for rent, ideal for those who want to spend a medium-long holiday at the beach. Traditional farmhouse accommodations are located in the surrounding area, and make it possible to combine the sun, sea and beaches with the charm of nature and the wholesomeness of Abruzzo’s countryside, with its traditions and excellent products. Not to be missed You cannot leave without having seen, and maybe purchased Abruzzo’s handcraft products, the result of centuries of skill. Gold and ceramics are the most popular, but fabrics and embroidery with abstract and floral decorations and lace are also excellent. The presentosa is famous, a typical Abruzzo pendant, symbol of love and fidelity. Food and drink Fish reigns in the kitchen, starting with the famous guazzetto, a savoury fish stew made with different types of fish. Pasta courses include the famous maccheroni alla chitarra (pasta shaped like guitar strings), as well as the excellent scrippelle 'mbusse, thin crepes dusted with pecorino cheese and cinnamon and covered with broth, the renowned timballo, also made with crepes, legend has it that it was brought to Teramo by a Breton sailor who disserted from Napoleon’s army. Another typical plate of the area are the virtù, the origin of which is lost in the mist of time. This is a dish to bring good luck, traditionally prepared on 1 May which includes seven types of dry legumes, seven types of fresh legumes, seven types of vegetables, seven types of meat, seven shapes of pasta and seven sauces, all cooked for seven hours. Excellent DOC wines from Abruzzo are served with these dishes. Surrounding area There are many interesting areas around Roseto to visit. Seven kilometres away lies Montepagano, for centuries the main town of the area, which offers enchanting views of the Adriatic and mountains. The village still has traces of its old Medieval fortifications, with the four gates to enter and the bell tower of its main church; the Annunziata parish church contains some wood statues and a large 15th century silver cross from the Teramo school. Roseto is connected with Montepagano by age-old footpaths, a unique occasion for excursions in contact with nature. Up in the valley of Vomano, approximately 10 kilometres to the west of Roseto is the Romanesque-Gothic church of Santa Maria di Propezzano (built between 1100 and 1300), with priceless 15th century frescos making it worth a visit (ask at the bar next door to see it). Legend has it that the church was built on the spot where a miraculous appearance of the Virgin occurred on 10 May 715. Continuing further on, is the church of San Clemente al Vomano in Guardia Vomano, with its wonderful Romanesque portal. In Teramo, 32 kilometres from Roseto, a stop should be made to visit the 1158 Duomo and church of Sant’Antonio (1227). The 13th century Civitella del Tronto fortress is located around 50 kilometres northwest of Roseto, while inland from the town, three national parks can be reached quickly: Laga Gran Sasso, Majella and Abruzzo: if you decide to go to Gran Sasso d’Italia (2914 m) you should stop in the small towns of Isola and Castelli, famous for their ceramics. In winter with its ski areas becomes the ideal spot for winter holidays. The most famous include Prati di Tivo and Isola del Gran Sasso, Prato Selva and Pietra Camela A year in Roseto A famous summer basketball tournament has been held for more than fifty years in the Arena 4 Palme court, which has made Roseto famous the world over. The arena can hold 4,500 spectators and is one of the biggest in Abruzzo. Numerous theatre, film and music events are held throughout the area in summer, and in particular in Villa Comunale.
