Finca La Maroma is a renovated and extended old farmhouse in the Axarquia region of Andalucia near the beautiful mountain village of Sedella , one of the white villages of Moorish origin, where Spain is still Spain and life has a different pace from the rest of Europe
The finca is located 3 miles from Sedella at around 1,500ft above sea level on a small ridge above which, a short distance away, towers La Maroma. It is the mountain from which the Finca derives its name and, being the highest peak in the Sierra Tejeda mountain range, is occasionally snow capped in winter and spring. Due to the protection of the mountain we enjoy broadly the same mild climate as places on the coast, with low humidity, little rain (320 days of sunshine per year), pleasant winter temperatures and generally clear starry nights.
We offer six self-catering studio-apartments for two people each, with either a double bed or two single beds, all of them 2m long. A cot is available and can be booked in connection with either double or twin apartment and one of the apartments has an additional sofa bed suitable for a child. Soon we expect to be able to offer an additional apartment with two separate bedrooms, set aside from the current apartments. All the apartments are comfortably furnished and have well equipped bathrooms with showers and electric heaters. All linen including towels is provided and replaced once a week and there are different duvets for summer and winter. We would only ask you to bring your own beach towels. Mosquito nets and electrical insect repellants are available, should they be required. There are radios and CD players in the apartments.
The kitchens are well equipped with four-burner hob, double sink, spacious fridge with freezer compartment, toaster, coffee maker, kettle and all the utensils and crockery you will need. To make your stay at the finca as comfortable as possible, we provide you on arrival with a starter pack consisting of everything you need for a first breakfast or supper. In addition we have a small on-site shop for our guests. Please click here for a list of items we normally stock and details of the welcome pack. At the shop there are also a washing machine which you are welcome to use, some board games and a selection of books you may borrow. We live at the finca and are usually around to help you with any information you need, to change your gas bottles when necessary and just generally ensure your holiday is as enjoyable as possible.
All but one of the apartments are now equipped with wall mounted fully enclosed gas convector heaters for the cooler times of the year (instead of the catalytic ones we used to have). Mostly they are only needed in the evenings and mornings, rarely during the day. The gas for these and for cooking and hot water as well as the electricity used are included in the rent.
All the apartments either have a small patio (separated by trellises and plenty of potted plants) or a balcony with a table, chairs and a parasol. In addition there is a communal terrace by the side of the pool with more tables and chairs as well as plenty of sun loungers. The pool measures 5 x 10 m with a depth of between 1.40 m and 1.70 m and is illuminated at night in summer. It also features a solar heating system, so that it can be used for most of the year but it is always open and cleaned so the braver souls can use it in January as well. Normally the temperature of the pool only drops below 20C (68 Fahrenheit) for around two months of the year. Next to the pool there is a jacuzzi with enough space for two people. The water in this is always kept above 35Cand it is a special experience to lounge in the jacuzzi in January when the almond trees are blossoming. In winter a sauna is available for use at no extra charge.
The Finca is the perfect location if you are looking for peace and tranquility, the ideal place to unwind and relax and to reconnect with the beauty of nature. Only a short drive from Velez-Malaga (30 minutes), yet deep in the heart of the countryside, its privacy remains protected by the winding roads. There are spectacular views in all directions from the finca and there is a good infrastructure of local small dust tracks by which the area can be explored by mountain bike, by car or on foot.
Our land extends to some 3 1/2 acres and slopes quite steeply down towards the bottom of the hill where a brook carries water in winter and spring. There are numerous olive, almond and carob trees and for many months each year the hillside is a riot of colours and scents, thanks to the profusion of wild flowers and herbs. In January the hillside opposite the finca is covered in pink and white clouds of fragrant almond blossoms and there are lavender, thyme, rosemary, poppies, wild orchids, corn-flowers and much more. We have laid out a path so that one can walk down the hill and we have placed a few benches under trees for you to sit and soak up the fragrances of the land and the many songs of nature. A short walk down this path from the house you will find a small house with a timber floored room of some 4 x 8 m. This is our meditation casita, in which our guests are invited to practice any meditation, quiet contemplation, Yoga, Tai-Chi or similar, either on their own or in the company of other guests. Whenever there is demand we also offer introductions to some of Osho`s meditations.

From Malaga airport you follow the road towards Malaga city.
After 3km the right hand lane takes you onto the A7 towards Almeria / Mortil.
9km later the N331 Antquera splits from the A7 via the right-hand lane, but you continue in the middle or laft-hand lane on the A7.
A pproximately 35km later, at junction 272, you leave the A7 for Velez-Malaga and the A335. As you leave the motorway you will be on a large roundabout and the second exit will take you into the local shopping center, which is a good place to buy some groceries before coming here. (If you do you will eventually leave the shopping center at the opposite end. Turn left at the roundabout in front of the shopping center, continue under the motorway and turn left again at the next roundabout, then right at the next and you will be on your way again).
Otherwise the fourth exit from the roundabout, counting the entrance to the shopping center as one, will take you onto the road to Colmenar / Casabermeja / Alhama de Granada. This is initially labelled C335 and after the first roundabout A335 / A356. You want to remain on this road, rather than follow the signs for Velez-Malaga, which lead into the town centre.
You will pass Velez-Malaga, Trapiche and two large petrol stations on your right and after 9.8km from where you left the motorway there is a sign pointing to the right "Canillas de Aceituno / Sedella / Salares". You follow this sign which takes you left after 300m and right after another 1.4km, then up the hillside for 7.5 kilometers to Canillas de Aceituno. You pass through the village and continue on the only road towards Sedella.
3km after the last house of Canillas there is a sign "Bienvenidos a Sedella" and you still remain on the tarmac road here. 2.4km after this sign you finally be able to see Sedella and there is a sign pointing to the right "Los Valverdes/Rubite". You follow this sign and you will now be on one of the local dust tracks. This is where you ought to check the reading on your odometer.
After a few hundred metres the track takes you through a gap in the hillside and after 900m to a fork, where you bear left (There is a sign "Finca La Maroma" here). 1.3km from the start of the track you reach the next fork and this time you bear right. There is a "Finca La Maroma" sign here, too. The other track is marked "Pasa Arenas" etc.
Another 2.6km from this fork, 3.9km from the point where you left the tarmac road, there is a small house right by the left side of the track and another track leads to the right, a little up the hillside. This too is marked "Finca La Maroma". After 500m on this track you pass another track to the left and now approach a small farm, which seems to be in the middle of the road. In fact the track continues immediately to its left, dips down the hillside again and we are the first and only house after another 400m.
The trip takes 75 minutes from the airport. There is a shorter way to Velez-Malaga, but this is more difficult to explain and does not give you quite the same idea of the finca`s location. You will find a hand drawn map of the network of tracks in your apartment and with this you will be able to take the shortcut, which reduces the journey by 15 minutes.
Sedella , Málaga , Andalusia , Spain
The Sierra which provides the backdrop for Finca La Maroma is a nature reserve with an abundance of wild plants and animal life. Here at the finca there is virtually no passing traffic apart from the odd mule or herd of goats since we are close to the end of a small private track. The finca is surrounded by steeply sloping farmland which can frequently be seen being ploughed by mules. Dotted on the land there are almond , olive, holm oak and carob trees as well as some vineyards. The Muscatel grapes from these are dried for raisins, which are much sought after in all of Spain, or are turned into the strong and sweet "Vino de Terreno" or "Malaga wine"
Sedella, 3 miles away and at more than 2,000ft above sea level , is a beautiful and charming village with the usual narrow meandering lanes of the "white villages" which betray the Moorish origins. It has around 450 inhabitants and there are several bars and restaurants, a pharmacy, a couple of small shops, an olive mill and a post office. Another three miles takes you to Canillas de Aceituno, a slightly larger village with 1000 inhabitants and more bars and restaurants. Our guests frequently walk into Sedella (75minutes) and occasionally into Canillas de Aceituno (two hours), both pleasant walks with ever changing vistas.
Close to Arenas, a village 5 miles from the finca, excursions on horseback into the local countryside are now available at Finca San Roca. (14 Euros per hour). In Sedella there is a lady who offers guided walks in the area, from relatively short and easy walks of a few hours only to full day hikes, up to the summit of La Maroma if you wish and provided the weather is suitable.
Vélez-Málaga, the capital of the Axarquia region and a busy market town with an interesting old quarter, ancient churches, monasteries and a substantial fortress but with virtually no tourism, is half an hour away by car, the coast at Torre del Mar or Caleta de Velez five minutes further. Less than one hour takes you into the old part of Málaga with Picasso`s birth house and the Picasso museum, the beautifully restored Alcazaba, the Cathedral with its lone tower and the Castillo Gibralfaro or alternatively to Alhama de Granada. It takes only a little longer to reach Antequera with the stunning rock formations of the Torcal and two hours to reach Granada. An additional half an hour will take you to Cordoba or into the Sierra Nevada
