Your host is just the right person to give you some insider tips on the best alternative places to visit, away from the touring masses. Prenzlauer Berg, once the "cutting edge" province of the former East still has many interesting places to visit, and is nearby Friedrichshain which is becoming the new "in" district of Berlin with many interesting new venues constantly opening up.
Berlin , Berlin Prenzlauer Berg , Berlin , Germany
My apartment is situated in Prenzlauer Berg, THE popular district in the former eastern part of Berlin. During socialist times a lot of political opponents lived in this district. Since the wall came down a lively artist and music scene has developed. Therefore the nightlife scene is very diverse: cinemas in the back courtyard, trendy bars, alternative cafes, but also theaters and first class restaurants. - everything within walking distance. T his part of Berlin, once the hot and alternative "in" district of the former East Berlin, is slowly being renovated, many of the old-style buildings are disappearing and the cultural boom has settled. There are still many new bars and venues opening up all the time though, but many of the resident artists and musicians have begun moving further east to areas such as Friedrichshain. The area still has remnants of former times, and is one of the city's more beautiful areas. Every season has something to offer, certainly the spring is nice to visit, with the Helmholzplatz and the Kollwitzplatz beautiful in bloom. For shoppers the area also provides interest with the historical Husemannstraße and the Kastanienallee, especially good. By tram it gives good access to both the railway and the underground. The most important sights such as Alexanderplatz, Museumsisland, Nicolaidistrict, Unter den Linden, Friedrichstrasse, Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz are easily accessible.
