Travel guide Cannobio
Cannobio's historic old town and beautiful lakeside promenade
The town of Cannobio is a sight to behold and one of the most popular destinations. Many attractions are within walking distance from your holiday apartment in Cannobio. Stroll through winding alleys and across small squares.
The Gothic town hall in the middle of the old town dates back to the end of the 13th century and is definitely worth a visit.
You should also not miss the parish church of San Vittore with its Romanesque tower. It has a lot to offer, especially from the inside.
The lakeside promenade with its patrician houses from the 16th and 17th centuries invites you to take a stroll with a magnificent view of the lake. Relax under the arcades of the waterfront promenade in cozy cafes and restaurants.
A sight that can only be admired from the shore during an excursion is the ruins of the Castelli di Cannero in front of the small town of Cannero Riviera.
The pilgrimage church of Santuario della Santissima Pietà is located in the immediate vicinity of Cannobio's picturesque waterfront promenade.
From islands, fortresses, and galleries
A cultural and historical highlight on Lake Maggiore are the
Borromean Islands. The three small lake islands can be reached by boat from
Verbania, Baveno, Stresa, and Arona. Isola Bella was once considered a wonder of the world. The main island impresses with the Palazzo Borromeo and a baroque garden. Only one of the islands, Isola Superiore (Upper Island) or Isola dei Pescatori (Fishermen's Island) is permanently inhabited today.
A popular excursion destination from Cannobio is the town of Locarno in Switzerland. The
Castello Visconteo is particularly popular with visitors. You can also visit this from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 4:30 pm. (As of October 2023)
An
archaeological museum in one of the houses of the castle complex displays Roman glass art from the 1st to the 4th century, which you should not miss.
Also worth seeing is a collection of masterpieces in the
Fondazione Ghisla Art Collection in Locarno.
Feasting and enjoying around the lake
Within walking distance of your private holiday apartment in Cannobio, you will find restaurants on the promenade and quietly located in the middle of the historic old town. There is something for every taste and budget, from pizzerias to traditional cuisine to haute cuisine.
Products from the surrounding area of the lake are well-known far beyond the borders of
Italy - above all, the cheese varieties Bettelmatt and Gorgonzola.
The plains of Piedmont provide the rice for typical
risotto dishes, and fantastic honey varieties, sausage, and cheese specialties come from the valleys of the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province.
If you want to cook inexpensively in your own holiday apartment or house with modern equipment, visit the
weekly market on the waterfront promenade of the town of Cannobio on Sunday mornings.
A
wine from the Ossola valleys or the vineyards of Novara goes well with this. The famous Barolo, one of Italy's finest wines, comes from Piedmont.
On the lake and on the mountains
Cannobio and the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola region are particularly family-friendly. There are numerous beautiful beaches for swimming around the lake. The
beach of Cannobio is one of the largest on Lake Maggiore.
Nearby, boats can be rented, and there are surfing and sailing schools and plenty of sports opportunities. Water sports are a refreshing experience on Lake Maggiore, especially during the warm summer months.
The beautiful location in the midst of breathtaking nature, characterized by the landscape of mountains and water, invites you to take extensive
hikes. From your private holiday apartment in Cannobio, it is only a stone's throw to the hiking trails of Valle Cannobina. Here, things are quiet and relaxed. Enjoy nature and let your children play and run.
For animal lovers, a visit to the
Safari Park in Pombia is recommended. The zoo displays numerous wild animals up close. Giraffes, cheetahs, tigers, and lions can be admired here. People aged 12 and over pay €26 admission. (As of October 2023)
The water of the waterfall, the
Orrido di Sant'Anna, cascades powerfully only three kilometers from the confluence between Lake Maggiore and the Cannobino River.
The Sacro Monte at Ghiffa and the hermitage at Leggiuno
A special hike on Lake Maggiore takes you to the pilgrimage site of Sacro Monte della SS. Trinità near the town of
Ghiffa, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Sacri Monti since 2003.
Next to the Sacro Monte is a
nature reserve with good hiking opportunities, which you should not miss either. Here you can extensively admire the flora and fauna.
Another pilgrimage site worth visiting is the hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso Ballaro, which nestles against the steep slopes of the eastern shore of
Lake Maggiore near the small town of Leggiuno.
From your holiday apartment in Cannobio, you can experience a fantastic drive along the lakeside road around the lake, which sometimes runs directly along the rock. It offers views of the lake and the surrounding mountains, runs through small hamlets and dreamy villages, and offers numerous stopovers.
