At a distance of three km from the house we've the Selene natural park. The archaeological park of Selene, situated inside an enchanting wood, consists of a nuraghe (of which only the base remains) surrounded by about 200 huts that formed the village, and 2 giants’ tombs located about 500 m away. The village is being excavated at present. Both of the tombs were constructed in blocks of local granite. The smaller one dates back to the XV century B.C., it has an exedra façade consisting of slabs embedded vertically into the ground, originally it had a central stele with a small doorway at the base, unfortunately no longer visible. The rest of the construction is in stone courses forming a rectangular chamber where the dead were buried. The second tomb(XIV century B.C.) is built in block courses, more characteristic of the Nuraghic Age. In the area in front of the tomb are 3 particular stones with holes in them called “conci a cappelle”, they were moved to their present position some time in history, but originally they would have been at the entrance of the tomb, preventing access to the sepulchral chamber. In the 3 holes, according to archaeologists, small betyls were inserted during religious rites, which in the Nuraghic Age symbolised the divinity of fertility. The stones that form the exedra are square, set very regularly and the funeral chamber still has its paved floor of granite slabs. The Selene wood is a beautiful evergreen oak woodland easily visited along its many pathways either on foot or by bike. There are also chestnut trees, poplars and many species of Mediterranean bush, from holly to heather, from strawberry trees to different varieties of rock-rose and broom The foxglove (digitalis purpurea) with its pretty purple flowers also grows here, in the past it was used as a heart-stimulant, but now it is a protected species.
Lanusei , Ogliastra , Sardegna , Italy
Lanusei is set as an amphitheatre dominating a valley, the coast and the sea. Surrounded by a forest of oaks, it also enjoys a privileged central position and can make its own resources and those of neighbouring villages readily available to tourists. It is the most important town for culture in Ogliastra, seat of the diocese and the religious college of the Salesiani, the law court and also the hospital. It has a wealth of cultural centres: museums, churches and monuments testify its resplendent past. Worth mentioning is the Astrological Observatory “F.Caliumi”, open to the public, situated on the top of Monte Armidda an ideal location, free from light pollution. Various areas of the territory display a gorgeous landscape rich in wild life: wild-boars, moufflons, birds of prey, partridges and hares, etc. The lovely scenery that can be admired from Monte Armidda includes the characteristic Perda Leana, Monte Tricoli, the porphyry crest of Serra Coronedda and the littoral plain. The archaeological legacy on the territory covers all the periods from early Neolithic to Roman times. The most significant finds are from the Nuragic era: 6 nuraghi, 2 giants’ tombs and about 14 areas where settlements are supposed to have existed. The most important archaeological and environmental site is Seleni, an ancient settlement perched on a rocky outcrop with, at a brief distance, beautiful giants’ tombs. Lanusei is the most important town in Sardinia's Ogliastra region and is situated in a charming position atop Gennargentu ridges that slope towards the coast. Its territory is known for its environment, including a natural amphitheatre in which its forested areas, archaeological aspects and the town's most important monuments are located. The Selene Forest is surely the most visited tourist destination. Lush ilex and oak spread out over a large part of the area where true botanical rarities are concentrated along with wildlife species. There are also a few refreshments areas for visitors. The location can also be reached by the "Trenino verde" (green train) which, for the most part of the year, allows visitors to enjoy the healthy air, typical of the area. Numerous springs with pure, fresh water that supply the nearby Alto Flumendosa Lake are also present. A Nuraghe, Tomba dei Giganti, sacred well and other pre-historic objects area hidden by the vegetation. We also recommend visits to Mount Armidda, well known due to the presence of an Astronomy Observatory, and Mounts Tricoli and Paulis where Punic-Roman evidence has been discovered. The entire area has signs of the past, traces belonging to the most remote times. However, it is the most recent history that has had a significant, instrumental effect on the town, already perceptible at the end of the nineteenth-century. Lanusei a small hilly town renowned for its invigorating healthy climate.
