Breathtaking nature and picturesque villages are among the highlights that make a vacation in Alsace so appealing. The Vosges have two nature parks. The Regional Natural Park Ballons des Vosges belongs to the Alsace, Lorraine, and Franche-Comté regions. The park features mountain pastures, high bogs, forests with fir, beech, and oak trees, limestone grasslands, rivers and streams, lakes, and ponds. The highest peaks of the Vosges are located in the area also known as High Vosges: The Grand Ballon, with an altitude of 1,424 meters, is the highest point. The Regional Natural Park of the Northern Vosges follows to the north, which has been recognized as a UNESCO biosphere reserve. This wooded area is home to numerous animal and plant species, where you may encounter deer or lynx with some luck. Information on the nature parks can be found at the visitor centers "Maison du Parc" in Munster and at the Castle of La Petite Pierre, Lützelstein. Breathtaking natural beauty awaits you outside the nature parks as well. Col de la Schlucht connects the Alsace and Lorraine regions. The winding pass road is worth a drive, and at the Belvédère du Spitzenfels, you can enjoy fantastic views of the surrounding mountains, Grand Ballon, Storkenkopf, and Hohneck. From the pass, you can continue on the Vosges ridge road towards Lac Blanc. The glacial lake lies at an altitude of 1,052 meters in the Haut-Rhin department. Alternatively, you can head to Gérardmer and explore the lakes Lac de Longemer near Xonrupt-Longemer and the clear mountain lake Lac de Gérardmer. The unique ship lift at Saint-Louis/Arzviller on the Rhine-Marne Canal is a must-see. You can learn more about the inclined lift during guided tours or boat trips. History enthusiasts can follow the traces of the Maginot Line during their stay in a holiday home.
In the small mining town of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, the Mineral & Gem is one of the most important mineral fairs in the world. Alsace is famous for its Christmas markets, which take place from the end of November until January 6th. Not only the big cities are festively decorated, but also the small villages are spruced up, and the markets – both large and small – offer beautiful and unusual items.
The Vosges region is perfect for a mountain vacation in both summer and winter. You can hike and explore the Vosges countryside almost anywhere. Beautiful hiking trails can be found, for example, in Val-d'Ajol. The cliff path at Col de la Schlucht is one of the most challenging hiking trails in the Vosges. The long-distance hiking trail GR5 is very appealing, allowing you to cross the Vosges on foot. Adrenaline seekers can tackle mountain bike trails in the valley, practice climbing on rugged cliffs, or glide over the valley with a paraglider. High rope courses, such as the one at Parc Alsace Aventure or the cable car "Fantasticable" in La Bresse, are not for the faint-hearted. You can enjoy sailing, windsurfing, diving, and fishing on Lac de Kruth-Wildenstein. Fun and excitement for the whole family await at the Ferme Aventure in Chapelle-aux-Bois. If you prefer to relax, you can unwind in Plombières-les-Bain with its hot springs. In winter, numerous winter sports resorts invite you to ski, such as the Champ du Feu in the Bas-Rhin department or the winter sports resort Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle. Challenging slopes and vast cross-country trails provide unlimited snow fun. In Gérardmer, La Bresse, and Basse-sur-le-Rupt, you can explore the winter landscape on snowshoes. No matter what you're in the mood for, your private holiday home is the perfect base for you and your family. You can rent chalets in all parts of the Vosges. The holiday apartments are characterized by their idyllic and quiet location, breathtaking views of nature, and comfortable furnishings. The cozy accommodations are equipped with TV, Wi-Fi, and modern kitchen facilities. The private holiday apartments are thoughtfully designed to cater to all holidaymakers' needs. The landscape is also suitable for a vacation with a dog in the Vosges. France is generally considered a very dog-friendly country. Your four-legged friend will love joining you on your excursions through the forests. Many hosts also rent their accommodations to dog owners. Often, the houses come with large, fenced gardens where children and dogs can play.
Alsatian cuisine is famous for its hearty dishes and excellent wine. Make sure to try the tarte flambée and onion tart, as they taste nowhere better than in your affordable accommodation in Alsace. Munster cheese is also one of the regional specialties that are well-known far beyond the country's borders. You can taste it along the Route du Fromage. Regional delicacies, such as the hearty Tourte (meat pie), can be sampled at mountain inns along this route. If you don't want to dine out, you can stock up on fresh local produce and prepare it in your chalet's kitchen.
Renting an affordable vacation rental in the Vosges is not just for nature lovers, but also for those who appreciate beautiful towns and villages. In the Grand Ballon nature park alone, over 350 places are classified as monuments. Val d'Argent and Pays de Guebwiller have been awarded the Pays d'art et d'histoire title. In Parc naturel régional des Vosges du Nord, you can also explore beautiful places, such as Hunspach, which has been listed among the most beautiful villages in France. Make sure to visit Kaysersberg with its numerous half-timbered houses and the imperial castle ruins. Plan a day trip to Colmar as well. In addition to the city itself, a visit to the Unterlinden Museum is also highly recommended. Another worthwhile excursion from your holiday home is a trip to the capital of Alsace: the city center and Strasbourg Cathedral are among the most important sights in Alsace. Other sights worth seeing include the numerous castles, fortresses, and ruins, such as Fleckenstein Castle near the German-French border or Hohlandsberg Castle in Wintzenheim. In addition, various museums abound throughout the Vosges, such as the hydraulic sawmill in Ban-sur-Meurthe-Clefcy or the world's largest automobile museum, Cité de l'Automobile, in Mulhouse. A real treat when staying in a vacation rental.
If you are traveling to the Vosges by car, your first stop will be Karlsruhe. If the Northern Vosges are your destination, drive on the B10 towards Landau and leave it in the direction of Hagenbach, then take the L540 towards Lauterbourg in France. From here, you can either continue on the A35 towards the south or head towards Wissembourg. If you want to stay in a vacation rental in the southern Vosges, you can take the A35 or the A5 on the German side and then drive towards Mulhouse to reach your holiday home. Good to know: In the greater Strasbourg area, you need a French environmental sticker to enter the environmental zone. On French country roads, a speed limit of 80 km/h applies since 1 July 2018. You can also travel comfortably by TGV from Stuttgart/Munich or Frankfurt. TGV stations can be found in Strasbourg and Mulhouse. You can continue with regional trains from there. If you prefer flying, you can head to the international airport Euroairport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg and rent a car to reach your chalet.
