The Sinis Peninsula is located about two hours north of your holiday apartment in Porto Pino on the west coast of the island near Oristano. The beaches are made of brilliant white coral sand, and the wetlands that separate the peninsula from the "mainland" are home to a colony of pink flamingos. Culture enthusiasts will find the ruins of Tharros, a Punic city rediscovered in the 19th century, and one of the oldest churches in all of Italy on Sinis. The cross-shaped Byzantine church San Giovanni in Sinis dates from the 6th or 7th century. A visit to the old town of Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, is also impressive. Start your tour at the Cathedral of Santa Maria di Castello, whose origins date back to the early 13th century. The façade and interior are in the Baroque style of the Spaniards. The pilgrimage church of Nostra Signora di Bonaria is the seat of the Mercedarian Order, also adorned with a lush Baroque façade. The Roman amphitheater, dating from the second century AD, is the largest Roman structure on the island. Other attractions include the Castello, the Torre dell'Elefante and the Torre di San Pancrazio from the 14th century, and the botanical garden.
Your holiday home in Porto Pino is just a few steps away from the fine white sandy beach of the resort. Behind the beach is a unique landscape of high dunes and flat Mediterranean scrubland, typical of many Mediterranean regions. Small Aleppo pine groves provide welcome shade. The gently sloping beach is perfect for a family holiday with small children. Surfers, snorkelers and anglers will all find something to enjoy. For lunch, head to one of the many cafes and restaurants. More powder beaches can be found on the west coast of Sardinia at Chia and Piscinas.
Even though your holiday apartment in Porto Pino is right by the sea – the real Sardinian cuisine comes from the mountains. Meat instead of fish, bread instead of pasta are the basic ingredients. That doesn't mean that you can't find fish and seafood on the coast – try grilled mullet or fried sea anemones, for example. The nearby island of San Pietro is famous for its (sustainable) tuna fishing. Traditional pasta shapes like fregola, malloreddus and culingionis are on the menus of local restaurants. The meat dishes are particularly interesting. During a holiday in the mountains of Sardinia, you may get to sample dishes prepared a carraxiau style. Lamb, beef or pork is cooked for several hours in the embers of a pit in the ground. Excellent sheep's milk cheeses, ranging from mild and creamy to spicy and hard, also come from the mountains; the most famous is Pecorino. Sardinian wines deserve their own chapter as they have preserved their unique character – typical of islanders. Try the red Cannonau and the white Vermentino. The Aragosta is produced in the northwest near Alghero, the most famous wine of the island.
The municipality of Sant'Anna Arresi with the small resort of Porto Pino is located in the southwest of the second largest Mediterranean island Sardinia in the Carbonia-Iglesias region. You can reach your holiday apartment or private holiday home with sea view in just a few hours from Germany via the airport in Cagliari. Car rental agencies are available at the terminal. The drive to your accommodation in Porto Pino takes about an hour and a half.
