Travel guide Blekinge County
Minimal Temperature Differences in Blekinge
Despite its geographical location in Scandinavia, the climate in Sweden is quite mild. Most parts of Sweden are humid, with minimal temperature differences between summer and winter. Average temperatures in
southern Sweden are between 0 and -2 degrees Celsius in January, and between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius in July. Thus, it never gets too cold in winter, and summers are very pleasant. This makes it ideal for a wonderful family vacation in the idyllic nature of the Blekinge region. A
beach vacation in Blekinge is also highly popular in the summer. Numerous vacation apartments and homes are available for you.
Little Nils Holgersson
Enjoy your vacation in an affordable holiday home or apartment and get to know the Blekinge region. Blekinge is known for the former spa Ronneby Brunn and the town of Sölvesborg. Since 2013, Sölvesborg has a unique landmark: a 760-meter-long bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, making it the longest pedestrian bridge in Europe. The structure connects the center of Sölvesborg with the new district of Ljungaviken and a recreational area on the Listerlandet peninsula, where large events are regularly held. Also worth visiting is the port city of
Karlskrona. In the old town areas of Saltö and Björkholmen, you will find small, picturesque wooden houses once inhabited by shipyard workers. At the Amiralitetskyrka, you will find the small (100 cm diameter) Nils Holgersson sculpture, depicting the character from Selma Lagerlöf's book. Or you can stroll through Karlskrona's Wämöparken, a cultural, natural, and amusement park with old houses and a petting zoo. Another great attraction is the Halland landscape, with its miles of sandy beaches, farm shops and cafes, and distinctive coastal towns (Varberg, Falkenberg, Halmstad, Laholm).
Monuments and Hard Rock
If you visit Blekinge in June and stay in a vacation apartment or house, you won't want to miss the Sweden Rock Festival in Sölvesborg. In the village of Norje, one of Sweden's largest music festivals is celebrated annually. International stars such as Deep Purple, Billy Idol, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, and Status Quo have performed here in a beautiful setting. Karlshamn also loves to celebrate. In mid-July, the population celebrates their city festival, named "Östersjöfestivalen," featuring live music, a fair, unique culinary specialties, and parades. In Karlshamn's harbor park, you will also find an impressive emigration monument, the Utvandrarmonumentet. The famous sculpture was created in 1959, as between 1850 and 1920, over a million Swedes emigrated to America. Many boarded ships in Karlshamn bound for New York. Art is highly valued in Ronneby. In the local cultural center Ronneby, you will find interesting exhibitions covering 1,500 square meters. Sölvesborg also has an art gallery hosting regular events, exhibitions, and installations. If you take a trip to the nearby province of
Värmland, you can experience the tradition and history in over 200 local museums. Colorful events often take place there. In the local museum of Brunskog, they even celebrate old Sweden for a week, known as "Gammelvala."
Strong Coffee is Always Welcome
Would you like to explore Blekinge's culinary delights during your vacation in a holiday home or apartment? Discover the various taste experiences of southern Sweden. We recommend trying the specialty Kroppkakor, available in different variations along the coast. It's a type of dumpling made from potato dough with a filling of onions, bacon, and other ingredients. The smörgåsbord is also famous - a lavish buffet full of cold and warm delicacies, including herring, salmon, shrimp, ham, pâtés, aspic, cheese, pudding, fruit salad, compote, fresh fruits, cakes, or pastries. At Midsummer in June, herring and new potatoes traditionally come with plenty of dill, along with the first fresh strawberries with whipped cream. The crayfish season starts in August. In autumn, many dishes feature rabbit, deer, elk, or the delicacy moose from the local forests. On Lucia (December 13), Swedes drink their first glögg - a sweet mulled wine spiced with cinnamon and cloves, accompanied by lussekatter, a saffron-flavored yeast pastry. Beer is commonly enjoyed in various strengths, and strong coffee is highly favored, even late in the evening.
Following the Footsteps of Pippi Longstocking
Blekinge offers a wide range of beautiful privately owned holiday homes and apartments, ideal for a family vacation. The naval city of Karlskrona is a destination for both young and old. You can explore its history at the Naval Museum on the island of Stumholmen. The city is also a popular bathing spot and a great starting point for boat trips into the archipelago with over 1,500 islands in the Baltic Sea. Four major archipelago islands are accessible by car via bridges: Senoren, Tjurkö, Sturkö, and Hasslö. Due to its many hours of sunshine, Hasslö is even nicknamed "little Hawaii." From Karlshamn, you can also embark on beautiful trips into the archipelago, such as to Tjärö and Tärnö. Along the Mörrumsån river, there are hiking and biking trails through beautiful nature. About 15 kilometers east of Karlshamn is a wildlife and nature park (Eriksberg), the largest game enclosure in Northern Europe with approximately 900 hectares. Or discover the home of Swedish culture in
Småland. In Astrid Lindgren's World in Vimmerby, children's book characters like Pippi Longstocking, Michel, and Ronia come to life. In the amusement park High Chaparral at Store Mosse National Park, you can dive into the Wild West. Småland also attracts visitors with the impressive Kalmar Castle in
Kalmar and the Polkagrisar in Gränna (red and white striped candy canes).
Fishing, Canoeing, Castles, and Palaces in Blekinge
Enjoy a wonderful vacation in a holiday apartment or house in Blekinge. Here, you can also visit Olofström, the only provincial municipality without access to the sea. Although it lacks a sea, it boasts countless lakes, making Olofström a mecca for canoe enthusiasts and anglers. Canoes and kayaks are often rented for several days. There are a total of 14 camping sites around the lakes. Or visit Öland, Sweden's smallest landscape. Access is via the Öland Bridge, the longest bridge in Sweden. Popular attractions also include the 350 windmills, a reconstructed Iron Age fort, and the vast limestone plateau and heathland in the south, which is a World Heritage site. The Solliden Palace in the north is an impressive ensemble where the Swedish royal family spends their summer holidays. Also worth visiting is Byxelkrok, a small fishing village nearby, with a beautiful waterfront promenade, a guest harbor, and numerous bars and restaurants. Öland is also perfect for cycling. It's a paradise for campers and beachgoers. On the west side of the island, you can swim in the Kalmarsund, which is usually warmer than the open sea.
