Travel guide Altenberg
Great Differences
When you rent a holiday home or apartment in a prime location, you are right in the heart of the
Ore Mountains. Climatically, the area belongs to a temperate zone. The ridge areas can also be characterized as harsh. The annual average temperature is 6.8 degrees Celsius. In the summer months, temperatures can reach up to 22.5 degrees. In winter, the thermometer can drop to -7 degrees. On average, there are 6.8 hours of sunshine per day. However, the climate changes again in the upper ridge areas. The annual average there is only between 3 and 5 degrees Celsius.
Oberwiesenthal at the foot of the Fichtelberg is the highest town in Germany (914 m above sea level). The region and location are also very suitable for skiing, snowboarding, or cross-country skiing. The nearest ski slope is certainly not far from your holiday home or accommodation. Ideal for a
holiday in the mountains in Altenberg - at any time of the year. When there is no snow, various hiking trails invite you to extensive tours in the spa town and hikes in the altitudes.
Hammer and Steps
A must-see during your stay with a holiday apartment or accommodation is the Botanical Garden Schellerhau in Altenberg. Here you can see various plants of all kinds - from the diverse mountains of Europe, but also from America, Asia, or the Caucasus. Besides this exotic exploration tour, you can also embark on a sound experience path. Here you will encounter nine experiences and sound objects. A great attraction for the whole family. Enjoy a magnificent view over Altenberg and part of the Ore Mountains when you climb the Louisenturm. The viewing platform is located at a height of 18 meters. 88 steps of a spiral staircase lead up there. The Louisenturm was inaugurated in 1891 and was named after the then Princess of Saxony. In Frohnau, a district of Annaberg-Buchholz, lies one of the most beautiful attractions in the region: the Frohnauer Hammer, a historic hammer mill. This is an impressive testimony to the proto-industrial development in the Ore Mountains. Or take a trip to
Dresden and marvel at the countless attractions of this impressive, world-famous city. During your stay, also visit the places Geising or Schellerhau.
Castles, Fortresses, and Museums
Renting a holiday apartment or house with a mountain view also offers the opportunity to explore the interesting museums of your holiday destination. Traditionally, much revolves around mining. There is more than one mining museum here. In the mining museums, you can trace the various stages of mining. A three-kilometer-long tour takes you through the visitor mine. The area is also famous for the large number of magnificent castles. Schloss Augustusburg, Burg Scharfenstein, and Schloss & Park Lichtenwalde are known as "The Remarkable Three." The hunting lodge Augustburg was built in the Renaissance style and today also houses a motorcycle museum, a carriage museum, or a museum for hunting animal and bird studies. Schloss Freudenstein in Freiberg is equally interesting and impresses with a four-winged complex. In the castle, you can also visit the mineral exhibition "terra mineralia." The exhibits, including gemstones, minerals, and meteorites, were provided in 2004 by the University of Freiberg as a permanent loan. With 3,500 exhibits, it is one of the largest mineral exhibitions in the world. Burg Lauenstein is a medieval hilltop castle (Lauenstein locality in Upper Franconia). The oldest parts of the complex date back to the 12th century. Lauenstein is the northernmost castle in Bavaria.
Nine Ingredients for the Next Year
Leave the affordable holiday apartment or house in the spa town, for example in Zinnwald-Georgenfeld, behind and explore the culinary world of Altenberg and the Ore Mountains. Typical for the region are the herbal liqueurs - such as "Knappenfeuer," "Pyramidenöl," or "Kufenwärmer." These have been produced in various brands since 1842 in the herbal liqueur factory in Altenberg. Typical Ore Mountains dishes include potato pancakes, which are enjoyed as a sweet or savory main course or as a side dish. This also includes Fratzen, buttermilk getzen, klitscher, or blueberry getzen. Reibekuchen made from potatoes, such as Rauchemaad, are also typical. Mushroom dishes also have a long tradition in the region of Saxon Switzerland. When food was scarce, the locals had to be inventive. Fried and boiled mushrooms, sour mushrooms, or mushroom schnitzels are still among the main dishes during the mushroom season. For example, Neinerlaa is often prepared at Christmas. The ingredients vary from village to village in the Ore Mountains. On Christmas Eve, nine components are served. These can include bratwurst, sauerkraut, lentils, rosehip soup, etc. Each ingredient is said to have a special meaning for the coming year. Celery represents fertility, dumplings represent wealth.
128 Kilometers of Pure Nature
A highlight of the attractions for the whole family during a personal
family holiday in Altenberg with private holiday accommodation or apartment with lift view is the summer toboggan run or bobsleigh track. It runs about 400 meters uphill and 1000 meters downhill. The ride lasts, depending on speed, between six and ten minutes. Great fun for young and old. In summer, where skiers or snowboarders are on the move in winter, there is a large adventure playground in Altenberg. The various slopes can be ridden down with a Devalkart or a monster roller. A lift takes you up the mountain - a ride takes about three minutes and promises a pure adrenaline rush. An experience for young and old is also a trip to the Zwickauer Mulde. It originates in the
Vogtland. The Zwickauer Mulde winds through forested and hilly landscapes. In some places, typical floodplain landscapes and wetlands have been preserved. Numerous places along this route provide a special insight into the impressive cultural landscape of
Saxony. The city of Zwickau can also be explored on a bike tour along the Mulde. You ride on forest and woodland roads, on quiet or moderately busy roads. The route has a total length of 128 kilometers - among others, you and your loved ones will pass through the cities of Aue, Rochlitz, Colditz, or Sermuth. There, the Zwickauer Mulde merges with the Freiberger Mulde. The Wildpark Osterzgebirge is also a nice event for the whole family.
The Slopes Await You
Every Thursday at 3 and 4 PM, the Altenberg herbal liqueur factory invites you for a tour. However, you should register by phone in advance. You will learn everything you need to know about the production of the delicious liqueurs. There will also be some entertaining anecdotes from the eventful history of the factory. At the end of the tour, you can, of course, taste some products. You will also receive a souvenir. In the store, you can buy schnapps, tea, or delicacies from the factory. A major highlight during a holiday with a holiday apartment or house with a mountain view in a quiet location is winter sports if you arrive in winter. The area around Altenberg in the Eastern Ore Mountains is usually very well supplied with snow. Numerous lifts and facilities ensure great skiing and snowboarding fun. Thanks to special floodlight systems, you can ski from Monday to Saturday until 10 PM. For snowboarders, there are even halfpipes. There are also special slopes and areas for children, where the smallest skiers can first try out in peace. On-site, you have the option to rent ski equipment.
