Agde was founded around 550 BC by Greeks living in Massalia (today Marseille). Today, Agde is particularly popular because of its medieval town image. Numerous facades are made of the black volcanic rock (basalt) of the aforementioned mountain. The imposing Cathedral St. Étienne forms the center of the town. The church was built over many epochs. Construction began in the 9th century and continued into the 16th century. The wooden altar cross was long regarded as a Michelangelo work, but this has not been proven yet – nevertheless, it's a masterful and worthseeing piece of art. On the terraces of the river Hérault, you can stroll and linger in one of the many cafés and restaurants under the shade of the cathedral. In the north, the Canal du Midi flows through the city, which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. The banks are lined with plane trees and are popular excursion destinations. In the Cap d'Agde district is the Musée de l'Ephèbe, a museum of underwater archaeology. Here, admire medieval ceramics and ancient bronzes. As an events tip, the traditional fisherman's jousting in August is held on the Hérault. Easily rent a holiday accommodation, holiday apartment, or holiday home for you and your family and enjoy a relaxing vacation full of excursions and experiences directly on the sandy beach in one of the most beautiful regions of France.

At the summit stands the "Tower of the English," a crenelated structure dating back to the 18th century that, along with other towers and Fort de Brescou, formed a coastal surveillance system. For water lovers, the marine reserve off the coast of Cap d'Agde offers plenty of water sports opportunities: swimming, diving, sailing, fishing, and much more. For the little ones, there are three amusement parks, two water parks (Aqualand and Splashworld) and a high ropes course. Aqualand is one of the oldest and largest water parks in Europe. Here you can certainly also practice water sports, such as water skiing. Perfect for a holiday full of sandy beaches with the family in southern France!
