Description

This cosy holiday home sits in a quiet valley on the eastern side of the Giant Mountains, with forest all around and several ski areas a short drive away. There’s room for fifteen people across three separate apartments. A private infrared sauna has recently been added to the house. It’s exactly the kind of place where a few families or a group of friends can be together without getting in each other’s way.

Each apartment has its own entrance from the shared living area. Each one also has two bedrooms: one with a double bed and a pull-out bed, and one with two single beds. That gives every family its own space, with a private bathroom and toilet. The ground-floor apartment is step-free, bathroom included. A connecting door links the two bedrooms, which is handy with small children or when the grandparents come along. The two apartments upstairs each have a small hallway and a bathroom with two sinks, one at adult height and one for the kids.

The heart of the house is the large living and dining area, with a wood-burning stove, a TV and a play corner full of toys. There’s a fully equipped kitchen downstairs and another upstairs, each with a fridge-freezer, dishwasher, hob, oven and microwave. Coffee lovers are well looked after with a filter coffee maker, a Dolce Gusto and a toaster. Cooking for fifteen is easy, and nobody has to wait their turn. There’s also a washing machine, which is a real bonus when you’re away for a week with children.

The best addition is indoors: a private infrared sauna for two, made of Canadian hemlock. It has colour light therapy and a built-in Bluetooth sound system, and it heats up to around 65 degrees. Switch it on whenever you like. It’s yours alone. After a day on the slopes or a long hike, it’s just what you need. In summer there’s an outdoor solar shower for a quick rinse after a bike ride. On the terrace with barbecue you can eat outside in the evening, while the children toast sausages at the fire pit. Next to the house is a playground with swings and a slide. At the sports grounds next door you can play tennis, beach volleyball and football.

Wi-Fi and parking at the house are free. If you arrive with more cars, there’s a car park nearby. There’s storage for skis and bikes, plus a boot dryer. For the little ones, cots, high chairs, a baby bath, a potty and stair gates are all ready for you. Your dog is welcome too.

In winter you’re spoilt for choice. The Žacléř-Arrakis ski area is about a kilometre from the house. For more kilometres of piste, head to Mladé Buky, around 12 kilometres away, or SkiResort Černá hora-Pec, just over 18 kilometres away. That’s the largest ski resort in the Czech Republic. Pec pod Sněžkou and Malá Úpa are also easy to reach for a day out. Cross-country skiers will find trails nearby.

In summer you can walk straight from the house through the forest to Stachelberg fortress and the Eliška lookout tower. The loop is five kilometres and works with a pushchair too. By car you’re quickly at the summer toboggan run and play park in Mladé Buky, the treetop walk in Janské Lázně or the Trutnov mountain bike trails. Sněžka, the Czech Republic’s highest mountain, can be climbed on foot or reached by cable car from Pec. A little further away but well worth the drive are the rock town of Adršpach and the safari park in Dvůr Králové. On hot days, the forest swimming pool at Retropark Sejfy, six kilometres away, is a lovely place to cool off.

And at the end of the day? The stove is lit, the table is full, and there’s always someone in the sauna.
