Description
For those interested in history and religion, Saint Père sous Vézelay is a discovery. Walking on old pilgrim paths, you pass through the most beautiful nature. Vézelay, a medieval town that was the starting point of the pilgrimage route to Santiago, has an extraordinary thousand-year-old monastery church dedicated to Mary Magdalene. Saint Père is in the Morvan natural park, the heart of Burgundy, 200 km southeast of Paris, 6 hours' drive from the Dutch border. Bicycles and canoes are available. The houses are also suitable for holidays together with family or friends. And from autumn to spring for individual sabbaticals.
The farmhouse has a garden at the front and is on a path to the river. By the river is the terrace. On the other side of the path is an old water mill that has not been in use since time immemorial. Once it was a coming and going of farmers who had their grain ground there. Nowadays, you can only hear the water rushing through the ruins. That the holiday home once belonged to a farmer is still evident from little things like the rings in the walls where animals used to be tied up. The now annexed grange (1852 is written above a window) was the farmer's barn.
The authentic and comfortably furnished house can accommodate up to seven people. In the 'basement' on the ground floor (accessible via a staircase in the living kitchen), you will find the toilet and bathroom (both are new) and a washing machine. The kitchen and living room are heated with wood-burning stoves, and if it gets really cold, there are also electric heaters downstairs and upstairs. There is a telephone and wireless internet access.
Behind the large kitchen is a cosy living room (one bed). In this room you will find an extensive collection of LPs (different genres).
Upstairs is a bedroom with two beds, and the spacious landing, separated by a curtain, is also used as a bedroom for two.
A few years ago, the house was extensively renovated. The old grange joined the house. Since then, the new, very spacious living room on the first floor faces the river, you have a beautiful view, of the old bridge and nature across the river. This not only made the house more beautiful and rural, it also made it a lot bigger. The new living room is about 7 metres long, 5 metres wide and 5 metres high. The beautiful roof construction of old beams has remained clearly visible. In the living room is a small floor, the 'sleeping loft', with a double bed and tumbledown windows giving a view of the river. Click here for the floor plan.
A staircase takes you to the ground floor, a large room with French doors opening onto the riverside terrace. This allows us to enjoy the house and place even more. There's plenty of room for two, and holidays with friends are now a great pleasure: the pleasure of sharing, but because of the space, not the burden. It should be noted that the sanitary facilities would still have to be shared with those friends. However, they can be accessed independently. And there is a handy second kitchen in the downstairs area of the grange for when you want to eat by the river.

Location and surroundings of object
Both in front of and behind the house you can sit outside. Behind the house flows the river Cure. From the terrace you have a beautiful view of the river and the rolling hills, with woods and farmland on the other side. On the terrace (called the bin) you can barbecue (barbecue available). Canoes, with paddles and life jackets, are available for renters in the grange. The canoes are suitable for boating on the fast-flowing River Cure. The water flows fast, but not so fast that you need to have canoeing experience. On the Cure, beautiful trips can be made. Paddling is also possible in the Cure. There are also two mountain bikes. You can make nice bike trips in the area. There are plenty of quiet asphalted roads on which it is good cycling, and mountain bike routes have been marked out in the area - on paths through woods and meadows you have a much greater range than walking. In the orchard (2005) located a few hundred metres from the house, it is good to play badminton. Trees with ripe fruit may be picked. The house is located on a quiet street of a small village. Around the corner are a bakery, a butcher, a small supermarket, a pub and a restaurant.

Saint Père (350 inhabitants) is famous for its 800-year-old church. Surpassing Vezelay did not succeed, but special this church has become. Outside the village are the three-thousand-year-old Gallo-Roman springs. A Celtic goddess was once worshipped here and a Roman bathhouse stood. The light-radioactive water is still medicinal.
The town of Vézelay is perched on the three-hundred-metre-high 'mountain of scorpions'. At its highest point is the nearly thousand-year-old 'cathedral' of Mary of Magdalene. This church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is described in every introduction to art history for its magnificent medieval sculptures of biblical figures, devils and demons. The town is still walled and the atmosphere of days gone by still hangs there. In the Middle Ages, Vézelay was an important place of pilgrimage.
The hilly region lends itself well to short and longer walks through vast forests and fields. You can walk from village to village on old paths and trails. Lovely walks include: Saint Père - Nanchevre - Asquins; Saint Père - Asquins - Vézelay; Saint Père - Pierre Perthuis. The area is part of natural park De Morvan, where industry is forbidden. The vast forests east of Vézelay are full of big game. In the middle of the forest is a Roman temple.
Burgundy cuisine is renowned. There are plenty of restaurants in this region where you can eat delicious food.
