Long Street and Long Market Together forming the Royal Route, rank among the most beautiful streets of Gdañsk. St Dominic Fair 31.07 - 22.08 The tradition of St Dominic Fair goes back to the 13th century. In the 16th century it used to draw crowds of German, French, English, even Spanish and Portugese merchants to Gdañsk. The port took in over 400 ships loaded with French and Spanish wine, silk, candied fruit, Portugese spices, English tin and cloth. Alongside, arrived circus artists, acrobats, magicians, and theatrical troupes. The August fair continues in its function of an attraction for the tourists and resident and combines the commercial aspect with a rich programme of cultural and sports events. The calendar abounds in a broad spectrum of open air festivities, concerts, and competitions. Like always in the past, the fair is jolly, crowded, and colourful. The Brass Band Festival and International Music Box Festival, the Sea Wolves' Festival and Festival of Illusion, the Summer Amber Festival, Blacksmiths' Holiday and Bread Holiday, the 'Folkloriada' and Music in the Historic Interiors of Gdañsk, St Dominic Run and Musical Inn are but a few of the long list of the Dominican hit events. For two weeks in August the city remains under the absolute rule of Neptune, Hermes, and Apollo's Muses. Traders' stands and street theatre troupes are all around. The sounds of old shanties, Gypsy romance music, ancient Gdañsk tunes, and charming music boxes waft in the air. The smell of exotic delicacies mixes with the aroma of sweet oilcakes and home-made bread. Everyone will find something to suit his/her taste at an artist's stand, or a precious antique piece at the flee market. The organisational swing of the Gdañsk fair is comparable to that of the acclaimed European events such as the Octoberfest in Munich or Weinachtsmarkt in Hamburg.
