Here is one of the blog articles I wrote on Montecarlo:
Today I was in the village of Montecarlo again after a long time. It is beautiful there! I lived there and got married there. But you hardly ever come to the village. Since an appointment fell through and I therefore had time, I went to Stefania! da Stefania' is the grocery shop in the village. Stefania has had this little shop for many years, where you can not only get bread or lunch, but also sandwiches with Tuscan ham and pecorino or the famous salsiccia; with a little fresh fruit you are ready for a picnic in the olive grove. Add some olives and tomatoes and you have a Tuscan starter.
Next door you can taste the wine from all the wineries around Montecarlo. There are several restaurants in Montecarlo, I can highly recommend "La Terrazza"; there you get traditional Tuscan cuisine from Massimo and Michela at reasonable prices and a very good pizza. Besides, the view is really beautiful and unique! The entrance is opposite the church, on the left behind the war memorial down the stairs.
You may wonder why Montecarlo is called Montecarlo at all. Charles IV of Bohemia founded the village in 1333 and the fortress has given the village much independence over the centuries. Today, the fortress is still privately owned and can be visited. The view is breathtaking and when you stand on top of the fortress wall you understand why the fortress was so strategically important. Only 162 m above sea level, it is the point where you can see not only Valdinievole, Collodi and Montecatini on one side, but also Lucca, the great plain of Capannori and Monte Serra on the other, and on a clear day even the tower of San Miniato!
See if the theatre is open, it is modelled on La Scala in Milan. It was opened in 1795 and is still in use today
Montecarlo, the small medieval village is definitely worth a visit! Explore the small streets or watch the village life with a glass of Montecarlo wine.
