The Holiday home

Vacancies: see calendar below.
The house was built around 1970 as a family holiday home. "Ceol na Mara" means "Music of the Seas" - the original owner was a musician. Still occasionally used by the family, it contains numerous objects not normally found in a holiday house, making for a homely atmosphere: books on the region and nature, holiday reading, fishing rods (incl. instructions of how to ..), family board games ..., all of which visitors are of course welcome to use. Outdoor furniture is provided, incl. a small barbeque and a fire-basket. The large sloping garden shows remnants of its former glory, with bluebells and rhododendrons in spring, apple-trees and grapes in the autumn. The mountain round about is grazed by sheep. Only 3 holiday houses are nearby, the closest about 70 m. away. In summer, the heating is effected by the solid fuel stove, with night storage heating and electric oil-heaters as a standby. Besides the living room and 2 bedrooms with 2 beds each, there is a relatively new kitchen and a new bathroom, the latter accessible from both bedrooms. A second WC lies outside the house. The housekeepers live about 10 min. away by car. The last bit of access to the house is by a steep, windy road, 4-wheel drive is not required!
The house offers ideal conditions for those looking for a peaceful time in a really beautiful environment. Dogs are allowed on request. There are lots of opportunites for children to play: climbing on rocks, hiding, exploring, learning to fish (instructions in the house, licence not required). However, with its fishing equipment and the hot stove, the house is not suitable for toddlers. Mobile phone reception is good, and Internet is accessible, though there's no wifi. There is a music centre, but no TV!! The kitchen is modern and well-equipped (dishwasher, washer/dryer), but no microwave.
Detailed information about the house and shopping/doctors/police etc. is provided in the house.

Location and surroundings of object

The house (75m²) lies on the mountain-side facing south-west with a widespread view of the so-called Kenmare River and the mountains on the opposite shore. The drive from the main road down to the pier below the house is on Streetview. A privately used beach is a 10 minute walk away, while larger beaches like glorious Derrynane Strand can be reached by car within 20 to 40 minutes. The nearest shops are in Sneem, about 20 mins away by car, with good shopping and restaurant opportunities, as also the little port of Kenmare (about 40 mins), a very attractive and busy town with many restaurants, and a lively farmers' market every Wednesday. The area around the house is suitable for mountain walks, fishing off the rock, swimming, bird-watching; available further afield are riding, golf, deep-sea fishing, sea-kayaking, guided mountain walks. Interesting day-trips include: to the Skellig Islands with the spectacular beehive huts and bird sanctuary (puffins!); around the Ring of Kerry with its beautiful views; to the Dingle Peninsula north of ours and its Gaelic speaking community in the picturesque town of Dingle and its many pre-history sites; even as far as the 200m tall Cliffs of Moher.
The colourful and lively village Sneem is about 20 mins away by car (or 90 mins on foot over the mountain). There is a good mix of shops including a small, modern supermarket, charming older supermarkets, good butchers, a bakery, chemist, souvenir shops, petrol station, post office, fish market once a week. And of course several very good pubs and places to eat.

Born in Germany, I grew up in Ireland and as a child spent many camping holidays in the area where our house now stands. For many years I lived in Cologne, and since 2008 in beautiful Brandenburg an der Havel, not far from Berlin, but make frequent trips back to Ireland and Kerry.
