TIPS.
In 1926, the Municipal Administration submitted a request to the Ministry of the Interior to have the locality included among the Italian health resorts, relying on “a movement of foreigners which ranges from 3500 to 4000 people per month in July and August”. Tourism in Follonica began with the construction of small wooden shacks used for seasonal residential and housing purposes, built on the dunes by families from the inland areas of Massa Marittima and Siena, interested in exploiting the heliotherapeutic properties of the sea. Soon, however, tourism took on a predominant role in the life of the place, to the extent of affecting its territorial organization, and the village equipped itself to grow outside the ironworking core that had originated it. . . In 1930, construction work on the Marine Colony commenced. The building would accommodate 250 children per shift, with a wide beach formed by abundant and very fine sand that slopes gently into the sea in front of it...
In just over 12 months, the building is completed and equipped. "...The children are arriving... These days by land, by car, on foot, by sea, authorities and private individuals out of duty and, due to the interest sparked by what is said, have gone to visit the Marine Colony and have all come back surprised and inspired... After the visit, everyone agreed in exclaiming: it's a wonderful thing... It rises at the end of the left beach of Follonica: surrounded on three sides by pines, as if set in the green, its main facade facing the sea, it lights up and shines in the full midday sun..."
