The Holiday home

In Lanusei, a cozy vacation-home for six persons, with garden, porch and terraces, lain on the outskirts of the small town of Lanusei, with a beautiful view to the Corongiu Valley and the sea. Three large bedrooms each for two persons. Two bathrooms. A large living; a dining room; kichen. Central heating. BBQ.

Large livingroom with satellite TV and a large balcony with its beautiful view. A fully equipped kitchen featuring oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer and a complete range of cutlery, crockery and kitchen utensils, with dishwasher. Electrical oven. Drying rack. Hair dryer etc.

This freestanding house lies outside the city of Lanusei, as a result from which you are insured of all desired rest and privacy. A short drive will take you to the Marina di Cardedu beaches or Lido di Cea. Its garden, offers a vast array of unique landscapes.

A paradise of remarkable beauty situated along the eastern side of Sardinia, where nature is at its best. Ogliastra, a fairly recent discovery with its beautiful coasts and mountainous interior.

Lanusei is the most important town in Sardinia's Ogliastra region and is situated in a charming position atop Gennargentu ridges that slope towards the coast. Its territory is known for its environment, including a natural amphitheatre in which its forested areas, archaeological aspects and the town's most important monuments are located.

The Selene Forest is surely the most visited tourist destination. Lush ilex and oak spread out over a large part of the area where true botanical rarities are concentrated along with wildlife species. There are also a few refreshments areas for visitors.

The location can also be reached by the 'Trenino verde' (green train) which, for the most part of the year, allows visitors to enjoy the healthy air, typical of the area. Numerous springs with pure, fresh water that supply the nearby Alto Flumendosa Lake are also present. A Nuraghe, Tomba dei Giganti, sacred well and other pre-historic objects area hidden by the vegetation.

We also recommend visits to Mount Armidda, well known due to the presence of an Astronomy Observatory, and Mounts Tricoli and Paulis where Punic-Roman evidence has been discovered. The entire area has signs of the past, traces belonging to the most remote times. However, it is the most recent history that has had a significant, instrumental effect on the town, already perceptible at the end of the nineteenth-century.

The Salesiani's role in culture, with the opening of schools and high grammar schools, had a positive social impact, thus making the town an important aggregation centre for surrounding towns. We suggest visiting the Salesiani's College, the attached church of St. John Bosco, the library and the archives building. It has been the bishop's see since 1927. The cathedral is dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene who is honoured with big celebrations the last Sunday of July.

The other important festivities are for Don Bosco (first Sunday in June) and for the Saints Cosima and Damian (Sept. 27th), celebrated in the homonymous small, rural church. Lanusei a small hilly town renowned for its invigorating healthy climate, Lanusei is set as an amphitheatre dominating a valley, the coast and the sea. Surrounded by a forest of oaks, it also enjoys a privileged central position and can make its own resources and those of neighbouring villages readily available to tourists.

It is the most important town for culture in Ogliastra, seat of the diocese and the religious college of the Salesiani, the law court and also the hospital. It has a wealth of cultural centres: museums, churches and monuments testify its resplendent past. Worth mentioning is the Astrological Observatory “”, open to the public, situated on the top of Monte Armidda an ideal location, free from light pollution.

Various areas of the territory display a gorgeous landscape rich in wild life: wild-boars, moufflons, birds of prey, partridges and hares, etc. The lovely scenery that can be admired from Monte Armidda includes the characteristic Perda Leana, Monte Tricoli, the porphyry crest of Serra Coronedda and the littoral plain.

The archaeological legacy on the territory covers all the periods from early Neolithic to Roman times. The most significant finds are from the Nuragic era: 6 nuraghi, 2 giants’ tombs and about 14 areas where settlements are supposed to have existed. The most important archaeological and environmental site is Seleni, an ancient settlement perched on a rocky outcrop with, at a brief distance, beautiful giants’ tombs.

Location and surroundings of object

Lanusei: It is the most important town for culture in Ogliastra, seat of the diocese and the religious college of the Salesiani, the law court and also the hospital. It has a wealth of cultural centres: museums, churches and monuments testify its resplendent past. Worth mentioning is the Astrological Observatory “F. Caliumi”, open to the public, situated on the top of Monte Armidda, an ideal location, free from light pollution.

Various areas of the territory display a gorgeous landscape rich in wild life: wild-boars, moufflons, birds of prey, partridges and hares, etc. The lovely scenery that can be admired from Monte Armidda includes the characteristic Perda Liana, Monte Tricoli, the porphyry crest of Serra Coronedda and the littoral archaeological legacy on the territory covers all the periods from early Neolithic to Roman times.

The most significant finds are from the Nuragic era: 6 nuraghi, 2 giants’ tombs and about 14 areas where settlements are supposed to have existed. The most important archaeological and environmental site is Selene: an ancient settlement perched on a rocky outcrop with, at a brief distance, beautiful giants' tombs.

Uncontaminated nature, quiet, ancient culture are some of the most interesting aspects of the area. Forests, woods, luxuriant vineyards, mediterranean vegetation spreading its colours and parfumes along hills and mountains, where the 'green train' slowly passes by.

This is the natural habitat for mouflons, wild boars, hares and partridges. Inland Visitors attention is caught by “Tonneri”, high mountains similar to towers, the typical mountain ridges (tacchi) of Seui and Ussassai, the caves of Su Marmuri in Ulassai, deep abysses like the Golgo (Baunei), the Flumendosa with its artificial lake populated by trouts, old “Koiles” sheepfolds built with juniper tree branches, alternated to rare and unique natural monuments. Another spectacular natural place, is Su Gorropu in Urzulei.

Ogliastra's coastline contains beautiful oases of sand wedged between the sea and the surrounding cliffs, and is one of the Mediterranean's most charming marine landscapes. Starting from the north, we come to sandy bays (cale) reachable only by boat or on foot, such as the famous Cala Luna, Cala Sisine, Cala Mariolu and Cala Goloritzé; further south we find interesting beaches such as those at Tancau, Orrì, Cea, the Marinas di Barisardo and Cardedu, Coccorrocci and the Golfo di Sarrala.

The other magical side to Ogliastra is the Nature, which is still unspoilt and which gradually changes as you climb over the hills to arrive at the mountains of the Gennargentu, whose varied landscapes and rare beauty are very satisfying to gaze upon. A land which is best appreciated by the attentive and curious observer, rather than the normal tourist. In terms of history and archaeology, the whole area is very worthwhile to visit, with many Nuraghi, Domus de Janas, Fonti Sacre, Tombe dei Giganti.

In ancient Etruria the Loceri peoples were famous at the time of the foundation of Rome. The name would, accordingly, suggest an early Etruscan settlement. The first settlements might have been located at Ager or Domus or Villa Luceri, meaning Locerio’s land or house or villa.

Before its attested destruction around 1316, the village may have spread to the other side of the Mesu river, not unlike its new dwellings are attempting to do today. Before its destruction Loceri belonged to the Judicature of Cagliari, to Piedmont, to the Spanish and finally to Italy.

We will take you on an unforgettable trip to see: the cave of the doves, the inlets of Portu Pedrosu, Portu Cuau and the beaches of Cala Goloritzé, Punta Ispuligi de nie (Cala dei gabbiani and Cala Mariolu), to the discovery of undersea siphons inside the “Fico” cave, where the monk seal was last seen. We will sail to the extreme tip of North Ogliastra to the splendid beaches of Cala Sisine, Cala Luna and the 'Bue Marino Cave'

Forty kilometres of coast in the wildest part of Sardinia, sheer cliffs dotted with coves and beaches that are the real jewels of the Mediterranean. One of the last natural paradises, where faunistic species such as, the Corsican seagull, the peregrine falcon, and the crested cormorant nest and live in harmony with the environment, a land that is jealously guarded by the custodians of the territory, the local shepherds whose flocks of goats graze free amid the mountains. The Ogliastra coasts are splendid oases set between sea and rock, rugged nature to dazzle us with some of the most fascinating marine landscapes of the Mediterranean. Leaving from the north we encounter the renowned coves of Cala Luna, Cala Sisine, Cala Mariolu and Cala Goloritzé, accessible only by boat or on foot; further south there are the beautiful beaches of Tancau, Girasole, Orrì, Cea, Barisardo, Cardedu, Coccorrocci and the gulf of Sarrala.

On the Ogliastra coast in a natural park with a wealth of plateaux and plains, artificial lakes and torrents, forests and bush, beaches, buttes and outcrops lies Cardedu. The whole area of Cardedu includes fine white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, cliffs which fall sheer to the sea, age-old woods and dry desert plains.

Enchanting, too is the landscape that climbs up the hills as far as the Gennargentu mountains, indulging the eyes with scenarios of rare beauty. Ogliastra is a land that must be relished slowly, it deserves more than just the hurried glance of conventional tourism. The entire territory is scattered with archaeological monuments, well-worth visiting: Nuraghi, Domus de Janas, Fonti Sacre, Tombe dei Giganti and Menhir.

One can follow trekking itineraries to the discovery of unforgettable places on foot, horseback or by bike, car or land-rover; walking from the mountains towards the sea following underground waterways amid century old forests, flowers, wild animals to reach incredibly beautiful coves.

For those who prefer to travel via the sea, an excursion aboard one of the many motor-boats that cruise along the coast is following pages are dedicated to those who wish to discover a paradise of priceless beauty, its culture, its people and its hospitality: Ogliastra. No printed image can fully describe the magic and harmony of this land, with terraces around and a bbq which can be used. All desired privacy is present.

Cardedu is a small area of the Ogliastra, one of the mose beautiful and wild regions historical/geographical of Sardinia. Situated a short distance from the sea, the village, of farming origins, has participated in a sudden urban development straight after the floods of 1951, that destroyed a good part of the houses of Osini and Gairo.

Situated in the centre-east of Sardinia, the region of Ogliastra includes the territories of 23 towns and villages. The most important centre is Tortolì, starting-point of three distinct itineraries which allow us to explore most of the Ogliastra territory.

The first itinerary goes along the road SS 125 Orientale Sarda, passing Girasole, Lotzorai, the detour to Triei, Baunei and Urzulei. The second one starts from Tortolì and passes through Ilbono, Elini, Arzana, Villagrande and Talana, whereas the third one includes the villages of Barisardo, Cardedu, Jerzu, Ulassai, Osini, Gairo, Lanusei and Loceri. Lotzorai, with the Medusa Castle, the complex of 13 domus de janas (= fairy houses) dug into a granitic hillock, at Km. 3 on the road to Talana, and the wood of Su Padentino, composed of secular plants and trees.

Passing Lotzorai, a detour will take you to Santa Maria Navarrese (a hamlet of Baunei), a most renowned seaside resort provided with a modern tourist port and a port of shipment to the inlets and the Caves of Bue Marino. Back to the Orientale road, almost straight away, there is one more detour to Triei; just before the village, about 4 km. further, an asphalted road leads to the plateau of Osono, which is rich in natural springs.

Here you can see the Royal eagle, vultures and hawks, and visit a well-preserved Tomb of Giants. The itinerary leads on to Baunei, which is most interesting for the lanscape and the naturalistic beauty due to the Golgo plateau, with "Su Sterru" which is the deepest chasm to be found in Europe; and its coast with the highest cliffs of the Mediterranean Sea and the Inlets of Mariolu, Luna, Biriola, Sisine and Goloritzé.

Situated over 500 m high in the mountains, Urzulei is the departure point to an unforgettable visit to the Gorge of Gorroppu which, with its 500 m high rock-face, is the highest Canyon in Europe. In this territory, rare and precious typical plants and rare animal species find their natural habitat.

From Tortolì, starting the second itinerary on the road to Ilbono, one finds the detour to Cheri, an area of great natural and archaeological beauty. Elini, a small village provided with an interesting granite train station, and a reservoir for supplies to the steam-engines; Arzana, with the wood of Carmine, the homonymous country church in Elini, and the nuraghic complex of Ruinas near Bruncu Evane; Villagrande and Villanova Strisaili, almost on the slopes of Gennargentu, with the splendid view over the lake High Flumendosa, the abundance of spring waters, the wood of S. Barbara and the nuraghic site of S'Arcu 'e Forros with a megaron temple and two underground temples.

Dear Tenants, I was born in Lanusei Sardinia. At the age of 19th I came to The Netherlands where since 1976 I'm working for The Dow Chemical Company in Terneuzen. Beside my own job, I began with the renting of some vacation homes on the Eastern coast of Sardinia; these units belong to good friends of mine. The owner on place will welcome you with open arms, although, I do have all the responsibility for a smooth 'n proper running of your vacation 'n as intermediary 'tween you and the owner on spot.

travel period: June 2015

Hallo,

Christina
