The Castle / Palace

In the land of the Liguri Apuani, an ancient pre-Romanesque population of uncertain ethnicity, stands the complex of vernacular architecture called "Castle of Bardine" which is also the place name of the place. The Liguri Apuani have populated this region since the mists of time perhaps coming from the Iberian Peninsula and Languedoc have settled around the Copper and Bronze Age, which date back to their most famous testimonies or the "Stele Statues", a sort of "menhir" with human features, until the second century BC. This people of indomitable pride and irredenta nature has long and bitterly opposed the Romans in their conquest of the whole of Italy until they allied themselves with Hannibal Barca, Carthaginian leader, in his visionary enterprise of attacking Rome from behind, descending from the snowy Alpine passes with his elephants. The Ligurians were definitively defeated by the Romans towards the end of the II century and completely deported to the Sannio, a territory between Campania and Abruzzo where recent research on human DNA has found similarities with the residents of the ancient areas of origin. At the end of the Roman domination, from the VI-VII century , this land belonged to the Lombard invaders who left evident traces of their presence especially in the place names; the same Bardine, Bardi, Monte Bardone, Bardinello. The birth of the building is estimated around the thirteenth century. But there are certain traces from the fifteenth century. The small chapel dedicated to St. Bernard of Clairvaux, belonging to the body of the original building is recorded in the registry of the Diocese of Luni (which gives the name of Lunigiana to the entire region) with the beginning of construction in 1645 and the end thereof in 1657. In the sixteenth century, during the Saracen raids, the building was used as a fortification and watchtower (the terrace with bastion can make you think of a raised tower for purposes of sighting interfacing with the villages to the nearby sea communicating with fires in order to alert the population in case of sighting of Turkish galleys that approached the coast and then go up deeply to raid and kidnap). Later the complex became the property of the notables and then of the Lords of the place has been further transformed into a farm where the sharecroppers resided, the farm workers and where they found shelter for animals and all the equipment, as well as the premises where they carried out all the activities necessary for sustenance. Clear traces of wine-making cellars, rooms with looms for the production of fabrics, stables for horses for cows, oxen and sheep have been found. In more recent times everything has been converted into a more modern key while maintaining the rural vocation. Two elements have remained as a testimony to the ancient and austere origin: the chapel of St. Bernard built to maintain the bond between people and the Creator and a dryer for the processing of chestnuts in the production of sweet flour that for centuries has nourished and bred the children of this hard and impervious land. Currently with a respectful and conservative renovation of its ancient history, the house offers rooms and bathrooms sober frugal, a large kitchen where you can find yourself to cook, eat in a convivial way, a common room where you can listen to music and watch TV, all with extreme simplicity with the necessary but without glitz or luxuries out of place. Two double bedrooms each have a bathroom while two other adjoining rooms are served by only one bathroom. It is the owner's intention to maintain and offer to those who grasp its intimate sense the opportunity to breathe and enjoy the ancient aura in tune with the souls of those who over the centuries and human events have lived within these walls. The surrounding space can be enjoyed with a large terrace with oven and bbq. A green space with a swimming pool not large but enough to provide refreshment and entertain children. All around nature offers an enchanting landscape and a fascinating view. The residence is suitable for families or groups of friends who want to share a holiday in Tuscany in serenity and relaxation, having the exclusive availability of the house and everything it offers. It is necessary to warn future guests that the house can not be reached directly with the car being built on top of a small hill, but a short walk of about 80 m. slightly uphill, however, the owner has a small off-road vehicle and will be available for any request for transporting luggage and everything else from the car to the house (shopping at the supermarket for example) and vice versa. It is also not recommended for very elderly people or people with mobility difficulties for the environmental reasons described.

Hello my name is Sergio and I am a 62 year old man who lives alone in this house. I have been divorced for more than 20 years now and have a 33-year-old son: Mattia and a 6-year-old grandson Martino. I am not from this region but I come from the sea where I have worked in various activities for more than 40 years. After the divorce I left the sea and moved here where I can live with great serenity. I love this land that is my new home and as the Latins used to say "UBI BONUM IBI PATRIA" . I lead a simple and spartan life trying to resist as much as possible to the sirens of modernity privileging being over having.
