Description

The informal atmosphere in our little house in a quiet village location with garden terrace will delight you. It is part of the historic, listed village centre and the room layout is typical of the country. Thick walls provide pleasant coolness in summer. In the colder seasons, an open fireplace (firewood cassette) in the living room provides sufficient warmth. The house was renovated from the ground up 15 years ago and has been further embellished in recent years. Through the entrance door you enter the living-dining room, which is one step down from the outside, with built-in cupboard, fireplace and dining area. Separated by an arch, one enters the kitchen with gas cooker, refrigerator, wall cabinets and sink. The tiled bathroom with washbasin, toilet and hip bath or shower is adjacent. Throughout the house there are terracotta floors. A narrow, steep staircase leads to the two bedrooms on the upper floor with a large double bed on the one hand and a bunk bed (in the children's room) on the other hand and equipped with wall cupboards and bedside cabinets. The upper floor has an exposed beam ceiling, the ground floor an old vaulted ceiling (typical for the country). All rooms, including kitchen and bathroom, have wooden windows with shutters, which should be closed in case of thunderstorms and rain. There is plenty of crockery and cutlery for at least 6 people. The built-in cupboard contains games, awnings for the beach, irons, dictionaries, tablecloths, etc. in the lower part and in the upper part. You have to bring your own bed linen, towels and tea towels. Woolen blankets, pillows and down duvets for the bedrooms are available. For the terrace, a dining table, chairs, garden loungers, woollen blankets, parasol, charcoal grill and candle lamps are available. You can park your car on the piazza in front of the village church, which is only 20m away. Here you will also find a public water point; the rubbish container for the village is at the end of the village in the direction of Scansano.

Location and surroundings of object

Leave the Autostrada del Sole at the Firenze Certosa exit (after the 2nd tunnel; Brenner-Florence motorway toll approx. 38 - 55 euros depending on the type of car) and take the four-lane Superstrada to Siena, then the Strada Statale 223 to Grosseto, which you leave at Bagni Roselle (at km 6.9). Go through the village of Roselle; immediately after the bridge at the end of the village, turn left towards Scansano. After about 3 km, turn left and you will pass a Total petrol station ("Da Pietrino Rex"), where you will be served very kindly when you fill up. 100 m further on, on the right-hand side, there is a supermarket where we always buy the essentials for the first few days. After a sharp right turn, you cross the river Ombrone and after 2.2 km you reach the turn-off for Arcille. In Arcille, just before entering the village, turn right towards Roccalbegna (passing the highly recommended Forra Piper restaurant) through Sticcianese. At km 5,3 (there is a house on the far left, a farmstead on the far right, a vineyard next to the road, Polveraia is signposted), turn right into a narrow dirt road leading to the farmstead. Passing the farmstead, you reach the ford over the river Trasubbie in the valley and after about 3 km you reach Polveraia on a steep and winding road (our cottage is at the other end of the village on the left, just before the parking lot).

Our holiday home is located in the province of Grosseto in southern Tuscany, about 40 minutes by car from the beach. This region is the province of Tuscany with the least rain, the most sunshine and the most sparsely populated. There is almost no industry, only agriculture: sheep breeding, wine and olive growing. Our village is situated above the river valley of the Trasubbie, at 300 m above sea level, accessible via a ford. The low level of car traffic in the village allows for a unique soundscape, where at night the only disturbing sounds are owls, cats in love or dogs barking at the moon. Children can also run and jump without worrying, since on the one hand there is no danger from speeding cars, and on the other hand the village's older inhabitants, positioned at every shady spot in the warm season, always keep a friendly eye on children. In summer it is breezy and not as oppressive as in the coastal plain of the Maremma. The area, a typical Tuscan hilly landscape between the sea and Monta Amiata (1738 m), always offers new and fascinating views. The small village, on the edge of which our cottage is situated, stretches along a ridge. The inhabitants are very open-minded, friendly and helpful. The house faces southeast, so you can always find a shady spot on the 50 sqm terrace. From the terrace you have a view of an olive grove and further on the massif of Monte Amiata. The village has a garden restaurant where small concerts take place from time to time during the season and where you can also eat cheaply. Recently there has also been a small grocer's shop again. The whole of Polveraia, including the holiday home, are "zona storica", i.e. they are listed monuments.

OUTDOOR AND RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIESThe near and far surroundings of Polveraia offer you great sporting and cultural opportunities. From Polveraia you can go swimming (Maremma natural beach), diving (Talamone, Monte Argentario, Isola del Giglio), visit hot springs (Saturnia, Roselle), skiing (Monte Amiata), horse riding (Azienda appointments, 5 km above Polveraia, or in the Maremma Natural Park), cycling and hiking (everywhere), and visit countless large and small art centres. Pisa (160 km), Florence (160 km), Siena (90 km), and Rome (200 km), are easily reached by car or train in day trips. Of course, all the smaller, lesser-known villages, small towns and cities with a romantic medieval townscape and Italian-Tuscan flair (Massa Marittima, Manciano, Scansano, Pitigliano, Sorano, Savona, to name but a few), which are all in the immediate vicinity and are definitely worth a visit, are enormously attractive. Especially with children, a visit to the nearby Tarot Garden of Niki de Saint Phalle is a is moreover in the middle of the ancient Etruscan heartland, so to speak, and you will find a whole series of Etruscan sites in the vicinity. The famous excavations of Roselle are right on the doorstep, but Tarquinia, Tuscania, Vetulonia, Populonia and other excavation sites are just as impressive as the diverse cultural riches and the scenic beauty, which changes constantly depending on the season. First and foremost is the coast, from the famous Punta Ala to the nature reserve of the Monti dell`Ucellina and the imposing Monte Argentario with its steep cliffs and romantic bays. But also inland, the landscape offers impressive views and surprises time and again, not only at Monte Amiata. The smaller roads and paths, which are hardly used by motorists, lead through wonderful areas and open up grandiose views of the hills and mountains and the coast time and again. In this sense, the daily 40-minute drive to the Marina di Alberese (natural beach, drive through a wonderful nature reserve with herds of horses and buffalo) is not an effort for us, but an enjoyable part of our holidays. The beach belt stretches from the exclusive Punta Ala to the beaches of Castiglione della Pescaia (with an excellent, inexpensive beach restaurant), Marina della Grossetto (bodybuilders and tanga wearers get their money's worth), Marina della Alberese (beautiful natural beach, limited access, therefore never overcrowded), via Talamone to Monte Argentario (diving paradise).
The offshore islands, the Isalo del Giglio, offer excclusive possibilities for day trips (reachable by ferry from Talamone). The beaches are not too crowded, the water quality is good, the pine groves immediately behind the beaches provide shade for cars and OPPORTUNITIESMeanwhile, Polveraia has its own small grocery/convenience shop (at Laura and Marco's), where you can also buy fresh bread, eggs, milk, sausage ect. During the week, cars come to the village with bread, fruit and vegetables, groceries, household items and textiles. Very good shopping can be done in the shops of Grossetto or in the supermarket of Scansano. In Grossetto it is market day on Thursday, in Scansano on Friday. Wine can be bought openly in every bar, in the cooperative up at the entrance to Scansano, but also partly in Michelin quality from the local winegrowers (according to the international wine guide, Morellino di Scansano is the coming wine of all). The shopping/restaurant/leisure and educational possibilities mentioned so far can of course only offer a limited overview of what is actually available. Basically, it has to be said: every restaurant, every small town, every beach that you have discovered yourself is worth more than any location, no matter how well described. In this sense, we see our little village house as the key to discovering a cultural region that can always be discovered anew and differently. In addition, you will of course find travel guides in our house and tips and recommendations in the guest book or in the blue house book from friends and guests who enjoy sharing their unique experiences with equally interested and interesting contemporaries

Beautiful holiday cottage

We stayed at Casa Birgitta for 1 week. It is a charming, cosy holiday home. It's not a stylish and hip place with a pool. The small kitchen is really well equipped for a holiday home. We like to cook and didn't miss anything. The people in Dorf are totally friendly and the peace and quiet is very relaxing for us middle-aged Berlin city kids. The contact with the landlord is very friendly and uncomplicated. We spent a lovely week and would have stayed longer if we hadn't had to move on. Casa Birgitta is highly recommended. It's nice that something like this still exists. Heike and René from Berlin

Wonderfully peaceful and authentic

We spent two weeks in the little cottage in Polveraia, the four of us (three adults and a toddler). The nightly peace and quiet (except for the crickets, dogs, and sometimes sheep, there's nothing to hear) is so relaxing. The little village is still very original and charming. The location is ideal for daily trips to the beach or to small Tuscan towns. The evenings on the large terrace under the starry sky and with the scent of nature were wonderful. The fact that the shower is more small and modest than luxurious is quickly forgotten. Highly, highly recommended!

Sweet little house in a small village

The little house is equipped with everything necessary that you need. I particularly liked the beautiful bedroom and the beautiful, large terrace. However, there is a steep staircase in the house, which could be difficult for people with limited mobility. The house is for people who like to do without the typical hotel holiday and prefer to spend their time individually, in wild nature and in a typical Tuscan village. The beach and the sea can be reached after a drive through the beautiful Maremma landscape.
In the village, there is an open-air pub where concerts also take place in the summer, and a small shop that sells everything for daily needs.

Pure Tuscany

Very nice, cozy cottage, perfect for those who want to enjoy the original surroundings, friendly residents, and tranquility in the midst of the Tuscan countryside. Even the trips to the numerous attractions (from culture to architecture to the sea) in the immediate vicinity are an experience in themselves. Day trips to Rome, Pisa, Siena, and Giglio are also very possible without stress (even with children). The small shop with very friendly service in the village has everything necessary in stock. The equipment of the cottage includes what you need (including many games for funny evenings). A large terrace invites you to sit outside in the morning. For colder evenings, there is a very effective fireplace with enough firewood. With a little luck, you can observe animals while walking - turtles in the ford, porcupines at dusk. All in all, very relaxing and peaceful.
