Sarlat.....jewel of the Périgord Noir.

With its rich architectural heritage and maze of medieval lanes and alleyways, Sarlat is renowned for being France's largest preserved medieval town. Having the highest density of historic and listed monuments in France, it's no surprise then that awe and delight await you at every corner of this fairytale-like town.

- Sarlat Christmas Market from 06-31 Dec with stalls, ice rink and luge.
- Cathédrale de Saint-Sacerdos rises above Sarlat, with its famous and much-photographed tower piercing the skyline, a church has stood on this site since the 10th century.
- Lanterne des Morts (Lantern of the Dead): this mysterious structure stands just behind the cathedral. Dating from the 12th century, its original purpose is still a mystery.
- Manoir de Gisson: Dating back to the 13th century, you can visit the manoir's vaulted cellars, apartments and exhibition and discover what daily life was like for the Sarlat nobility and the Gisson family in bygone days.
- Maison de la Boétie: built in 1525, this is the birth place of Etienne de la Boétie, French judge, writer, and founder of modern political philosophy in France.
- Église Sainte Marie with its covered market and 360° panoramic lift: take the panoramic lift for a 360° view over the rooftops of Sarlat. The covered market is open most days until 13:00.
- Sarlat Market: one of the largest and best in the region, the market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday. The farmers' market occupies Place de la Liberté (Wed and Sat) and an artisan market runs the length of Rue de République (Sat) where you can buy a diverse range of products made by local artisans.
- Gastronomy: the Périgord Noir is renowned for its 'produits du terroir': foie gras, truffles, duck, walnuts, cabecou and Rocamadour cheeses. There are a plethora of fabulous restaurants in Sarlat offering wonderful Périgourdine cuisine.

Best of all... simply take your time exploring this magical town, getting lost in the maze of narrow medieval lanes where you'll find an abundance of cafés and restaurants hidden away and small unique shops selling artisanal products and local gastronomic produce, as well as antique shops and numerous galleries.

The wider Périgord Noir region is rich in natural beauty and offers a diverse range of attractions and activities for visitors: from canoeing down the River Dordogne, to medieval castles, chateaux, pretty villages and even the chance to follow in the footsteps of our prehistoric ancestors. With such an abundance of places to visit and things to do, there really is something for everyone here and many are only a short drive from Sarlat.

The region has more than its fair share of picturesque towns and villages, with 10 of Aquitaine's 15 "Plus Beaux Villages de France" found in the Périgord: Beynac, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, La Roque-Gageac and Domme are all under 20 minutes away with St-Amand-de-Coly, St-Léon-sur-Vézère, Limeuil and Belvès less than 40 minutes and Monpazier less than an hour.

Canoeing on the River Dordogne - the Dordogne is a slow flowing river with plenty of river beaches where you can stop for a little while, so why not take your time and bring a picnic? There are numerous canoe operators along the river offering canoe hire and when you've finished your canoe trip they'll drop you back to your original pick up point. It's a truly blissful way to wile away a few hours.

Known as "the land of 1001 castles" the Périgord has more than its fair share of Castles and Chateaux. A few of the popular ones are listed here and are well worth a visit: Chateau de Castelnaud; Chateau de Beynac; Chateau de Commarque; Chateaux des Milandes; Chateau de Puymartin.

At Limeuil, the River Vézère meets the River Dordogne and as you follow the Vézère northwards it is here, in the UNESCO listed Vezere Valley, where you will find an enormous wealth of prehistoric dwellings and cave paintings: Lascaux II and Lascaux IV (opened in 2016); Font de Gaume; Grotte de Rouffignac; Bara Bahau; La Maison Forte de Reignac; Roque Saint Christoph

There are also spectacular chasms and caves at Gouffre de Proumeyssac and Gouffre de Padirac (in Lot) plus recreation and activity parks and other places of interest: Les Cabanes du Breuil; Le Thot; Le Bournat; Les Jardins de Marqueyssac

Hi! We're Geraldine & Joe. For years we happily holidayed in various parts of France with our daughter until we discovered the Périgord Noir! From the moment we set foot in Sarlat (we only came for the market!) we fell in love with this magical little town and were hooked. Drawn back time after time, last year we had the opportunity to buy our lovely apartment and so La Liberté Studio was born. Currently in London, we move to Sarlat in 2018. We and our local team look forward to welcoming you for your stay at La Liberté Studio.
