The highest elevation in the municipality is the 2,506-meter-high peak of the Großes Hinterhorn (Mitterhorn). In the village, average summer temperatures reach 22 °C. In winter, temperatures drop well below zero degrees Celsius. From December to early April, the town is suitable for a
ski holiday in Tyrol. The Pillersee valley is one of the most snow-reliable regions in Tyrol.
Authentic Tyrolean inns offer only the best
In
Tyrol, guests can dine in a truly original and authentic setting at the mountain huts and certified Tyrolean inns, easily recognized by their green sign featuring three leaves. These establishments guarantee a genuine atmosphere, traditional cuisine, and regional products. Take a look at the menus: Classic Tyrolean dumplings with bacon or cheese dumplings are popular options. The latter is filled with the typical low-fat gray cheese. Inquire about the ripeness of the cheese, as mature cheese becomes sharp and intense in taste. Schlutz or Schlipfkrapfen are ravioli-like pastries, usually filled with potatoes. For a hearty snack, try a "Brettljause," featuring local cheeses, sausage and bacon specialties, eggs, and pickles. A "Ripperlessen" consisting of pork ribs is also served on a wooden board. Be cautious with the horseradish (Kren), as it can be very spicy and open up your sinuses. The Tyroleans prefer beer, but every good innkeeper in Austria has a well-selected wine list. Taste local drops from Burgenland or
Styria.
Hiking, climbing, and skiing – Plenty of action in the Pillersee Valley
Your holiday home in St. Ulrich am Pillersee is the ideal starting point for exploring the Kitzbühel Alps, whether on foot, climbing, or skiing. Over 400 kilometers of hiking trails lead through the breathtaking mountain scenery of the Kitzbühel Alps – perfect for a
holiday with a dog in Tyrol. Dogs are also welcome in most mountain huts. Pillersee is a popular swimming and fishing spot with an abundance of trout. A bike path circles the entire lake. Children can enjoy various theme parks, such as the Triassic Park on Steinplatte mountain in Waidring, where dinosaurs come to life, and Timok's Wild World at the Fieberbrunn mountain railway, which features a high ropes course, a climbing course, and various water games. Familienland Adventure Park offers more than 50 attractions, including Austria's largest family roller coaster, a petting zoo, and a leisurely train. In the winter months, three large ski areas in the region provide endless fun on the slopes – Pillersee/Buchensteinwand ski resort in the village and the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn and Waidring-Steinplatte ski resorts.
At the summit, the sky is within reach...
The biggest attraction of the Pillersee Valley is the 30-meter-high walk-in summit cross on the Buchensteinwand. The Jakobskreuz offers four viewing platforms at 19 meters high, which can be reached via an elevator. Hiking and biking trails, as well as a chairlift, take you up to the cross. Within walking distance of your holiday home in St. Ulrich am Pillersee, there are two impressive churches. The baroque Parish Church of St. Ulrich with the rectory dates back to the 12th century. The hall itself is from the early 15th century. The originally Romanesque and later Gothic church was later transformed into the Baroque style, then Neo-Gothic, and in the 1960s became Baroque again – even churches are subject to trends. Another church is located in the hamlet of Adolari at the northern end of the lake. Frescoes from the 14th century can be admired in the choir of the small church. A unique attraction in St. Ulrich is the world's oldest pine oil distillery, where about one liter of the healing oil is produced from approximately 250 kg of pine needles, cones, and branch tips. The distillery can be visited in the summer months.
