Turin: The city of the Savoy and the famous shroud
Turin's history and architectural history goes back to Roman times (Porta Palatina), but the overall appearance of the city was mainly shaped by the Baroque period. The area of the old town is characterized by systematically rectangular streets with uniform city palaces and a total of 18 kilometers of arcades. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Turin underwent a unique transformation in Europe on behalf of the rulers of Savoy. The most important secular buildings are the castles and residences of the Dukes of Savoy, which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. A pilgrimage site of worldwide importance is the Turin Cathedral from the 15th century. From the outside, the cathedral presents itself with a simple facade. On the cathedral is the impressive dome of Guarino Guarini. Inside the church, the famous Turin Shroud is preserved, a linen cloth that allegedly shows the image of Jesus. The shroud chapel can only be visited on special occasions. Art lovers should also visit the Museo Egizio with a significant collection of ancient Egyptian art and the Galleria Sabauda of Italian and Dutch painting from the 15th to the 19th century. The Galleria Sabaudo shows, among other things, works by Hans Memlings, Rembrandts, Botticellis, Titians and Tintorettos. Also, take a trip to the Castello del Valentino. It is a former ducal residence in Turin within the Parco del Valentino on the left bank of the Po. The Palazzo Reale, located in the heart of Turin, is considered the main symbol of Savoy power.
