We called it Il Castello (the Castle), because of its peculiar narrow structure which reminds of a towerhouse. It is said that it was an ail of the adiacent building, which was, according to the recollections of my grannie, a nunnery. Nowadays, it is a little nice cottage, which comprises three levels, is about 40 sm, can accomodate up to 3 people and be combined with our other holiday houses for groups or families up to 20 people. All levels are communicating, that is with no doors (except the bathroom with shower which is a room itself and has a door!) and linked by a steep woodden stair. On the ground floor, a living room with fireplace, kitchenette and sat-tv. On the first floor a bath with shower and a room with a single bed. On the second floor a lovely bedroom with double bed. Outside a little exclusive yard for your sunny afternoons equipped with garden furniture and just in front of the house entrance a spacious garden (1000sm.).
Il Castello is located in a nice secluded place on the edge a hamlet of nowadays 100 hinabitants. A narrow road drivable with small cars crosses it. Cars can be parked within our property or in case of medium-large ones on the village main square at about 150 mts. asphalted distance from our house, to be covered on foot.
Our hamlet offers neither groceries nor bars, but some can be found in the hamlets nearby (about 2kms) or in Bagni di Lucca (5 kms). On request, on the day of your arrival we can arrange for you a welcome dinner. Natural honey production in the vicinity.
Town and location of object

Bagni di Lucca (at 5 kms), is a nice tourist resort, where you will find general stores, shops, and sport centers (public swimming pool, tennis courts, chemist, supermarkets, etc.) and a beautiful spa known during the 18th and 19th centuries as a beloved destination for personalities and artists like Byron, Shelley, Puccini, Metternich and Radestsky. Traces of this glorious past are to be found in its monuments: the English Church, the Catene bridge, the Spa, the villas, the Casino, etc. The Casino was the first gambling house to be opened in Europe. It was closed in the 19th century, but during the last years it has been perfectly restored and reopened as a wonderful location for parties and wedding receptions. In our spa town you can find some good trattorias, where you can taste our traditional cuisine based on simple ingredients like mushrooms, chestnuts, sausages, stakes etc.
Enjoy beautiful walks, bicycle or horse rides on the hills around us, full of churches and Roman parishes: S. Pietro in Corsena, Pieve and San Cassiano di Controne, Montefegatesi, Casabasciana and Vicopancellorum. Nearby, Borgo a Mozzano and the Maddalena bridge, better known as the Devil’s bridge, the little canyon Orrido di Botri, the Garfagnana villages, Barga with its typical historical centre, Coreglia Antelminelli and its Museum of Plaster Figures and Emigration. Lucca (25 km), Pisa (50km) and the close Tyrrhenian coast, (or Versilia-Viareggio beaches, 40km) offer further cultural artistic and eno-gastronomical diversions. Closest airports: Pisa (PSA; 50 km) or Florence (FLR; 85 km). Clostest train station: Bagni di Lucca/Fornoli (10 km). Daily bus service from Guzzano (our village) to Lucca (about 30 m drive).
Bagni di Lucca , Lucca , Tuscany , Italy
Guzzano offers neither groceries nor bars, but some can be found in a village nearby (2 km) or in Bagni (5 km). You can purchase at our house a very good quality local honey and wine bottles or buy fresh vegetables and fruits from a "verduriere" (a guy with a picturesque van full of everything!) coming up to Casa Ciesa every friday morning. Market day is wednesdays and saturdays morning in Bagni di Lucca. On request we can arrange your dinner.
Our village was once very populated. At the beginning of the XX century a lot of inhabitants sought their fortune abroad. Most of their grandchildren still live outside Italy but come back here for holidays once in a while. Some English tourists bought a house in our village, following up a long tradition which dates back to the XIX century, when English poets or artists like the Brownings were literally enrapted by these surroundings. From Casa Ciesa you can go on foot down to Bagni di Lucca in an hour or explore the surrounding woods in search of a forgotten church.
