Location and surroundings of object
In the middle of the Hungarian Puszta, in an idyllic garden, lies the Edengarten Lodge. Here you will find breathtaking nature, ideal hiking, cycling, riding and bathing conditions and the Hungarian "paprika" feel-good ambience. Town with inhabitants on a dead arm of the river Körös. In the Turkish times there was a popular river crossing here. in 1723 it became a market town. Thanks to the settled Slovak farmers the development of the town began. The achievement of the evangelical pastor Sámuel Tessedik was decisive for the promotion of the town. He introduced new reforms in agriculture and in the regulation of the town. The Sámuel Tessedik Museum houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the town. Next to the building stands the Protestant church planned by Tessedik. The sight of the church is the organ with 2500 pipes in pneumatic system. Among the numerous tourist destinations of Szarvas, most visitors are attracted by the Arboretum, which is a nature reserve of national importance. About 1600 species of trees and shrubs are presented there, of which about 300 are evergreens. Interesting sights are offered by the plant collection in all seasons. There are several gardens in the town - the castle in Anna Wood is the seat of the Körös-Maros National Park Directorate, and the new Körös Valley Visitor Centre has been built here. The house of the painter György Ruzicskay is located in the Elisabeth Woods, with exhibition rooms and a house museum set up by the painter himself. The town's Slovak Museum of Local History is a typical example of farmhouses from the end of the 19th century. The collection of embroidery and educational fabrics exhibited there is particularly remarkable. The train mill, built in 1836, is an important monument of traditional trade. Near the dead arm of the Körös stands the classicist Bolza Castle, built by General Peter Bolza from 1810 to 1820. The park is a protected nature reserve. In Szarvas you can also find the memorial road leading to the small windmill symbolising the centre of Hungary, whose wooden statues symbolise the decisive events of Hungarian history. The Tote-Körös with its 30 km long water surface is the fifth largest still water in Hungary, ideal for water tours, families and children's groups as well as for fishing. Szarvas is rich in cultural, traditional and sporting events, which last from June to September: Amateur Harness Competition, Harvest Day, National Harness Competition, International Herdsmen's Meeting and Bagpipe Festival, National Harness Competition with Ponies, Days of Körös, Days of Szarvas, Amateur Canoe Competition, Saint Stephen's Day events, Fishing Day, Fish Soup Cooking, Harness Competition with Ponies of Ezüstszőlő, Plum Day, Children's Folk Dance Festival.
