History, River and Grounds at Dildawn
Dildawn Estate, now providing self catering holiday accommodation, is steeped in history.
The historic battle at "Druim Cheate", now generally known as Drumbeat, was fought between the Scottish army under Edward the Bruce and the English and Galwegians in 1308. Dildawn, believed to be derived from the Gaelic word 'Dail Dawn' meaning 'field of fate', is situated on the site of the English armies encampment the night before the battle.
Historians have also discovered an early earthwork on the grounds, showing the remains of an ancient circular fort. The site is yet to be excavated and the date is unknown, but the discovery was first documented in 1977.
Dildawn today is a much more peaceful place, boasting unspoiled grounds comprising natural woodlands, nature walks, ponds, streams and scenic areas where one can picnic, unwind and enjoy the great variety of birds and wildlife. Clean air and beautiful country surroundings along with the wide range of flora and fauna creates an idyllic setting for children and families to explore at leisure.
The mile long stretch of the River Dee acts as the Estate's boundary. The river is renowned for its salmon and trout fishing, and this stretch features two good salmon pools and three exceptional trout fishing stretches ideal for fly and spinner fishing.
For those wanting a riding holiday there are period stables, looseboxes and a large grazing field within the estate. For golfers we have numerous excellent courses in the local area, and throughout Dumfries and Galloway.
