Fethiye , Mugla , Turkey
Fethiye. The popular resort of Fethiye, 135 km southeast of Marmaris, hosts an important marina at the head of a beautiful bay strewn with islands. A hill crowned by the ruins of the crusader fortress built by the Knights of Rhodes overlooks the little port. Above the town, (called Telmessos in antiquity), numerous Lycian rock tombs, reproducing the facades of ancient buildings, were cut into the cliff face.
The road to Fethiye winds up and down the high mountain ranges that were formed during the Tertiary Geological Period, and hundreds of bays and inlets surround the Fethiye shore line. This mountain range (it was called the Kragos and Antikragos in the antique period) has an altitude of more than 6560 feet (2000m.) and lies parallel to the shore without a single passage to the inner regions. Snow is often visible on the tops of the mountains even in early summer.
Fethiye is also a busy and bustling market town and apart from tourism, its most important product is tomatoes and other fruit and vegetables. There are large and colourful markets in Fethiye on Tuesday and Friday, where village people come down from the mountains to sell their fruit and vegetables as well as a variety of handicrafts, clothes and leather goods.
