Annaberg-Buchholz - the heart of the Ore MountainsIn the heart of the "silver" Ore Mountains, between Chemnitz and Germany's highest town Oberwiesenthal, lies the mountain and Adam Ries town of Annaberg-Buchholz in a fantastic location at the foot of the Pöhlberg. Tradition and innovation, history and modernity combine here to form a wonderful symbiosis.
The roots of the town are rich silver discoveries. After the founding of Annaberg by Duke Georg (1496) and Buchholz by Friedrich the Wise
(1501), the town experienced a grandiose upswing. By 1530 Annaberg was already the second largest town in Saxony. The master calculator Adam Ries, the mining entrepreneur and braid publisher Barbara Uthmann, Saxony's first surveyor Matthias Oeder, the artists Hans Hesse and Hans Witten, and the school reformer Johann Rivius are all associated with the town's early history.
Today, the large district town is an important centre of business, tourism and administration in the Ore Mountains. Supra-local institutions as well as a broad spectrum of industries, ranging from toolmaking and the
Metal and vehicle industries to the food and textile industries, characterise the structure.
With a picturesque old town, four visitor mines, the Adam Ries and Erzgebirge museums, the Frohnau Hammer and St. Anne's Church, there are significant sights. In addition, carving and lace-making days, monastery festivals and pottery festivals, farmers' markets and fashion nights as well as the largest folk festival in the Ore Mountains, the Annaberger Kät, attract countless guests from near and far every year.
Christmas traditions and customs create a flair in the town during the Advent and Christmas season that can only be experienced in Annaberg-Buchholz (photo). The Annaberg Christmas market and the big mountain parade on the fourth of Advent are special highlights.
