Additional Information
An ideal destination for walkers and nature lovers to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The villages have changed little over the centuries, their history reflected in their architecture and the landscape surrounding them: Roman cobbled tracks, abandoned watermills and ancient hill forts left by the Moors.
Local food includes the delicious jamón, for which the region is famed, forest mushrooms and seafood from the nearby port of Huelva, from which Columbus set out in 1492.
In the nearby town of Aracena are all the amenities of modern life, including an internet cafe, but you might meet a man on a donkey, too! Visit the huge living limestone cavern explore the many historical buildings or enjoy tapas in a pavement café.
Spain's largest wildlife sanctuary, the Coto de Dońana National Park, is within reach. This world heritage site, visited by a great variety of migrating birds, is one of the remaining strongholds of the lynx.
On the coast there are fishing villages and some of Spain's finest beaches; while Seville, the lively Andalusian capital, is accessible for daytrips.
