The Island of Aegina,is located in the Saronic Gulf, 20km south-west of the Port of Piraeus. The boat trip from Piraeus to Aegina Town takes 40 minutes by Flying Dolphin and about one hour by Ferry. Aegina town with its population of just over 6,000 is a thriving working port and is in fact, the second largest in Greece after Piraeus. In the port you see a small picturesque church of Aghios Nikolaos. The harbour was built by Capodistrias using the stones from the ruins of Kolona. The town conists of several classical mansions, along with a number of buildings constructed after the liberation of Greece in 1828. Nearby you find the hill of Kolona, upon which are the remains of the temple of Apollo which, after being struck by lightening, now amounts to only a single column.
