In 712, the Moors conquered Seville. Their rule lasted until 1248 when Ferdinand II of Castile reclaimed Seville for the Christian kings during the Reconquista. Although smaller than the famous Alcázar of Granada, it is one of Seville's architectural highlights and, like the cathedral and the stock exchange by Juan de Herrera, is on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Andalusia is considered the homeland of the region's typical tapas. The small snacks for picking (para picar) were originally served on small plates with beer or wine. The glasses were covered with the plates (tapa means lid) to keep insects away. In many traditional tapas bars in Andalusia, a simple tapa is still served free of charge with every drink.
