Salina is one of the seven enchanting islands of the archipelago of the Lipari Islands, in front of the Sicilian north coast. Peacefully lying on the sea, Salina exudes calmness and tranquillity. The breath-taking countryside, the gorgeous sunsets and the almost surreal silence may have inspired also Massimo Troisi in his last film “Il postino” (“The postman”), which was shot in this region.Furthermore 95% of the Italian capers, exported all over the world, thrive here, in this green and blossoming area. Also the liqueur wine Malvasia, called “nettare degli Dei” (“nectar of the Gods”), an esteemed DOC, is cultivated in this area. Salina is the second largest of the Lipari Islands and consists of three districts (Malfa, Leni and Santa Marina), interweaved through numerous narrow roads and alleys. The beach of Pollara, the most gorgeous of all bays, is absolutely worth seeing. If you decide to go on a hike you will admire the gorgeous view from the tops of the mountain Monte Fassa dei Felci (982 m), from where you can overlook the whole natural reserve and the whole Lipari island archipelago to Sicilian north coast with its majestic Mount Etna. You can reach the island by ferry or hydrofoil from Milazzo, Messina, Reggio Calabria, Cefalù and in the summer time also from Palermo or Cefalù.
