The district of Cannaregio Cannaregio is one of the six historical districts of Venice (sestrieri). The main canal of the neighbourhood (canale di Cannaregio), is directly linked with Canal Grande, it is very active, you will see gondole, row boats, and the bus-boat that links the various districts of the city. The architecture in the area is wonderful. To see in the area: Church Madonna dell'orto One of the more beautiful churches of Venice, famous for its frescoes by Tintoretto: "the Last Judgment ", "the Vision of the Cross to St Peter", "the Beheading of St Paul", "Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple". In the family chapel in the right side of the alter, there are the graves of the artist and his sons. You can fint this church in the upper part of the map, in the center. Its name is due to a miacoulous image of the virgin, that a sculptor put in the garden of his house, and that was soon venerated by the inhabitants of the neighbourhood. New Gueto It is probably the first jewish gueto in the world, it is in a little island in the district of Cannaregio. It was made in 1516, and its inhabitants where locked inside for the night, and had a list of limitation to their social and economical activities. Centuries later it was so overcrowded, that in 1797 its inhabitants got permission to live in other districts of the city.
