Greencastle is the nearest town: It is a commercial fishing port, and has the National Fisheries College and a picturesque harbour area. The town almost certainly got its name from the old castle, which in turn may have got its name from the 'green' freestone with which it was built.
The castle, which is now a ruin, was known as the De Burgo Castle, and was built in 1305 as a base to provide a stronghold for Norman power in the North West. It was named "Northburg" and was built on the site of a much older fortress. There is a more modern Martello Fort beside the ruin, built by the British during the Napoleonic Wars to stop a possible French Fleet from invading.
With the decline of the fishing industry, Greencastle has become more of a "holiday village". There has been much building of new homes in recent years. A Maritime Museum and a Planetarium in the town are worth visiting. There is also a small golf course near the shore, and another one at Redcastle, further south towards Derry.A few km down the road is the larger town of Moville, where one can enjoy a variety of restaurants and pubs.
Hill walking has become an increasingly popular activity, and there are some spectacular walks in the area. A rewarding coastal walk would be along the cliffs from Inishowen Head to Kinnegoe Bay, with its beautiful beaches and the site of the wreck of the Spanish Armada vessel, the "La Trinidad Valecera", which went down in 1588.

Easa Breac Tara is a lovely, newly built, new holiday home with four bedrooms to sleep eight. It has a fully fitted kitchen and dining area, utility room, two bathrooms, a lounge, entrance hall and landing. It is fully insulated, double glazed, and has oil fired central heating for added comfort in the colder months.
It is situated on an elevation on the lower slopes of a hill known as 'Crocknasmug', and overlooks the mouth of Lough Foyle. It is in an area known as Stroove, and lies a little North East of Greencastle, close to the Dunagree Point Lighthouse; which marks the most easterly point on the Inishowen Peninsula.
One can look across Lough Foyle, and see Magilligan Point, which is where the ferry from Greencastle connects to Northern Ireland. This nearby ferry service is very convenient, and makes the cottage an ideal touring base for exploring the North. It allows easy access to Port Stewart, Port Rush, Coleraine, The Giants Causeway, Bushmills Distillery, Dunluce Castle; - and many other attractions that would have added an extra 78km to the journey by having to drive all the way around the Foyle, were the ferry service not there.
Closer, and also within view, when looking across the Lough, is the lovely stretch of beach known as Benone Strand, and the Mussenden Temple, perched precariously on the edge of a cliff at 'Downhill', once the extravagant estate of an 18th century bishop of Derry. This is a national Trust administered property, and worth a visit when on the other side.
The nearest pub and restaurant is a convenient 1 minute walk away and is called the 'Drunken Duck'; - A good sea food bar with great views.
